She was the lead in the movie.  They go for other categories sometimes if they want to secure a win.  If the lead is too competitive,  they'll go for the supporting mess.  She was definitely the leading female in fences

I can't believe how dense u are.  No one is in a movie or show alone.  There will ALWAYS be other actors.  She and denzel were the lead actor and actress of fences, hence there being a lead actor and ACTRESS award category.  What she submitted herself for award wise had less to do with her not being lead actress and more to do with her playing it smart to secure her award.  U and afro are THE SAME

Because she was like the foundational character for the others character development
same with Olivia pope

the show had entirely to many characters overshadowing hers for her to remain a lead imo

and i personaly felt there was black tokenism going on in both of those shows

one black lead to 6 ofther whites on the same sho
thats shondaland tho
they were leards in a technical sense but as the storylines unfold not so much
