I think what they mean by "know each other" is they didn't know each other WELL.
Just in passing.

Kind of like in an office building.
There's some coworkers you see everyday, but just in passing - you don't really know them.
And then there's some coworkers whose office is next door to yours, and you guys talk all the time.
