It's near impossible to live up to the hype/expectations after an 8 year break.
One of my main issues with the album is that it doesn't, (in my opinion) seem cutting edge or changing the game. The R&B girls have been doing this Lo-Fi beats, stream of consciousness, lack of structure song production for years now. Obviously Bran is gonna put her spin on it, but the way she's presenting these songs (other than harmonies) is nothing new or revolutionary to the genre. And I'm actually surprised to see so many people on here going up for it when I know that was a huge gripe from a lot of y'all about these new "
can't write a bridge" girls

Also, I'm let down by the material. After these years of teasing about this being her most personal mess yet, it still seems rather detached. Co-opting mental illnesses as metaphors for relationships when you haven't truly lived with that diagnosis is a bit messy, to say the least. It bothers me how quickly she separated herself from the songs in interviews, saying she wasn't bipolar or borderline but relationships have made her feel like that

It all feels a bit disingenuous.
Usually I can get past songs or content I don't like because her voice saves the day. I've always felt her voice can make the shittiest song good, and there's always some inflection that gets me in my feelings, even if it's a song that I don't like. On B7 her voice feels very gruff, and like she's deliberately trying not to sound technically proficient. There's no vocal moment I rewind over and over like on all her other albums. She sounds like she did on FR and B&P on a lot of this album.
It's helped me to listen to this album as if it were coming from another artist. I was less critical, and able to enjoy it more. I definitely do not understand how people are already putting this above Afro and Full Moon on their lists, but to each their own. I think she should have released SAML, UO, LD, Borderline, NT, SS, and BB as the EP 4 years ago when they first started working on this. It doesn't really work as a full album for me and def feels cobbled together on the back end.
I think she will benefit from a shorter break between albums next time as well. I know she's been sitting on this music for years, and that's probably part of the reason it doesn't feel very of the moment. But I get she needed to get this out of her system and move on.
