Yeah
Technicality is a womp
lyrics are a womp
Production is a real WOMP

so its her vocals yet again that saves the project
and its  more creative than formulaic but

Im just not in this space to fully receive the album

ive done alot of my own healing

But ratherbe is timeless lol

It a solid effort and it will fit different for different ppul

I def feel like her next project will be better than B7. Now that her name is back out there and the MENT phase is over and done with, we can prob get more records like Rather Be. Her writing will improve and I think everyone else will up their game.

Eh the album is a least favorite to me
The music Is good and glad she back but This album is a therapy session
and all of her albums are about alignment in terms of what speaks to you more
shes put this project out but its not a real-time snapshot of her state of being
she took the time to do the work (shadow work)
others who have not done their shadow work will find alot of resonance with it (pandemic forced alot of ppul to reflect and do shaddow work) and those who have can take it or leave it

its more of a Human Monster to me (like gagas the fame and the fame monster)

alot of the rawness of these songs have been watered down because of this perfectionist stuff she does
and with mixing issues even though minor

she did not follow her gut instincts musically and it shows (working with camper, redoing the songs, not solid on the tracklisting)

I hope she grows alot more as a secure decision making independent artist moving forward

Ive gifted a few ppul the album because i said i would when it dropped but I am a bit embarrassed to have them listen
cause its just not the brandy we usually promote
but

yeah

On to B8

Thanks for your take. Although I feel like there were some cringe-worthy assumptions made about the process of the album and her involvement (unless you were involved in creating the album in which case I take that back).

Nonetheless still playing this masterpiece on repeat 💫💫

I'm sorry I love this album lol

I feel like she went into it with a lot less pressure so she was able to be more creative

The album is definitely flawed, but I feel like it's her most genuine. No Brandy album has ever made me this emotional. Her pain resonates through each song. She really poured her heart out on this album.

Though I struggled in the beginning, I love the unconventional structure of the lyrics and melodies. Like India Arie said it feels very Broadway. I love that the lyrics are so personal. It's like only she and the person the song is about will really get it, but it's still relatable. Of course it's not her best production wise, but Brandy is a true artist so her technique will elevate anything. Contrary to popular opinion I think her and Camper worked well together and I have no problem with him doing b8. They will learn from their mistakes and get better.

The album reminds me so much of Amy Winehouse FRANK album (which is my favorite album ever). I think they are both great (deeply personal) and flawed (not the most polished at some parts) for the same reasons.

Is this her best work? Probably not, depending on how you look at it. But it's definitely my fave album by her.

It's near impossible to live up to the hype/expectations after an 8 year break.

One of my main issues with the album is that it doesn't, (in my opinion) seem cutting edge or changing the game. The R&B girls have been doing this Lo-Fi beats, stream of consciousness, lack of structure song production for years now. Obviously Bran is gonna put her spin on it, but the way she's presenting these songs (other than harmonies) is nothing new or revolutionary to the genre. And I'm actually surprised to see so many people on here going up for it when I know that was a huge gripe from a lot of y'all about these new "can't write a bridge" girls  :dead:

Also, I'm let down by the material. After these years of teasing about this being her most personal mess yet, it still seems rather detached. Co-opting mental illnesses as metaphors for relationships when you haven't truly lived with that diagnosis is a bit messy, to say the least. It bothers me how quickly she separated herself from the songs in interviews, saying she wasn't bipolar or borderline but relationships have made her feel like that  :dead: It all feels a bit disingenuous.

Usually I can get past songs or content I don't like because her voice saves the day. I've always felt her voice can make the shittiest song good, and there's always some inflection that gets me in my feelings, even if it's a song that I don't like. On B7 her voice feels very gruff, and like she's deliberately trying not to sound technically proficient. There's no vocal moment I rewind over and over like on all her other albums. She sounds like she did on FR and B&P on a lot of this album.

It's helped me to listen to this album as if it were coming from another artist. I was less critical, and able to enjoy it more. I definitely do not understand how people are already putting this above Afro and Full Moon on their lists, but to each their own. I think she should have released SAML, UO, LD, Borderline, NT, SS, and BB as the EP 4 years ago when they first started working on this. It doesn't really work as a full album for me and def feels cobbled together on the back end.

I think she will benefit from a shorter break between albums next time as well. I know she's been sitting on this music for years, and that's probably part of the reason it doesn't feel very of the moment. But I get she needed to get this out of her system and move on.

Kurama

I like that you framed it as a therapy session Lew and her doing her shadow work through her art. I think that helps me to be more understanding around why it feels like it lacks as a whole. I also love that everyone seems to be delicate about mental health issues now, wowz lolz!

Thanks for sharing your take, seems like any dissent around here is getting ridiculed...by the same ppl who dont enjoy ridicule...

Bigmac' you have been absolutely DESTROYING with these posts, i see you. Whew.

I understand your opinion
!!!!! I definitely understand. Although I find B7 MUCH better than Human... :dead: I do agree that kinda it's in that same territory as Human. It's very moody. It's not
an album that I can listen to everyday, unlike NSN, Fullmoon, Afrodiasic, and 2/11. B7 is very mood specific and I have to be on that vibe to wanna hear it. It's a good album, but besides my like 2 or 3 token songs, I haven't really revisited the album. I'm just not on that vibe right now and in the mood for it. Still a good album, but yea...

MY issue was the quality. :dead:

Overall the FEEL of Human is not my tea. BUT the quality and vocals keep me coming back over and over again, even though I don't really like the alber that much  :dead:

Shit. Her vocals on Camouflage alone slay anything on B7 twice over. The EMOTION :plzstop:

FRANCE

I do want for her to tap more into her upper range again on the next record. Especially with the shape her voice is in now. Some songs on B7 were just a bit too low. Like Bye Biploar. It was literally in the key of a male singer.

It's not my least fav, but it's not up there for me either.

We'll see how it ages.

Because 2/11 was hot for me at the time, but I only listen to 5 or 6 songs from that album anymore, if that.

!!!!

That's one thing I miss about Rodney- he was always pushing her higher in her range and I think it kept things from sounding too monotone b/c her voice would brighten up as she went up there.

Bye Bipolar is near Monica-level of vocal sloppiness to me. Way too deep and brassy sounding with unecessary running everywhere. I truly can't fathom how people call this one of her best vocals. Not MANdy  :plzstop:

wizzy

This was astute
I do feel like it actively frames where she stands and
considering that she's needed to get this off her chest for years I'm happy for her that she did it
It is the least of her albums so far but it was indeed therapeutic for her.
I agree that the next album should be solid. I'm excited for that.
