Japan is amazing. I could live there.

I did a southeast Asia tour 5 years ago I thoroughly enjoyed it and had zero issues anywhere. Went to 8 countries and it was an amazing experience.

Except Hong Kong, some shop keepers were scared of me because I'm a 6'4 black guy.

I did not go to mainland China though.
