She is actually a young beautiful woman but disguises herself as an old lady in the woods to get children to trust her 

The way Gretel clocks her tea

The way she teaches Gretel to be a witch like her

Just brilliant writing all around ..should've won an awards mess

I haven't seen this movie in over 15 years. I didn't think it was all that good, myself! I remember a scene of somebody running through, some sort of maze, and it was beautifully shot though.

That building suspense leaves you on edge and is what really makes you JUMP

Visually, the movie was ART and ahead of its time. Don't get me wrong. I get why it's classic... The suspenseful visuals is what had me drawn in the first half... but the story itself just didn't go anywhere to me. I think the issue for me was that the entire story AND conclusion of the film was basically all mapped out for us from the very start. There was nothing genuinely additional to the story that was revealed or learned by the end of the movie.

I feel like a lot viewers are shook from the art and suspense of certain scenes n visuals and their interpretations of possible symbolism... But not really by the story development itself. I'm definitely more of psychological horror fag too, but I'm more SHOOK by great storytelling n development and being ambushed by the unexpected, vs haunting visuals n symbolism & just letting my imagination create the horror for me.

Now SEE!!! That's more so Bre. But Shit Follows DEFINITELY grew on me. It took me about 3 watches. Its definitely one of the films where you have to just use your imagination and create the horror yourself.
