Absolutely one of her best songs. Failed by a low budget push from a label that didn't have a fucking clue. That is all.
It was corny, but sis looked amazing in the video. She didn't even love the song when it was released.
It was amazing and remember it playing on the radio all the time. A lot of non fans loved it. It was the perfect song to come back with after what she been through. The song was powerful and the video. I remember it did good on 106 & park for a long time too.
Brandy always don't like a song or a album that don't do well. She need to stop that shit cause she praise it to sell it but admit later she hate it when it don't do what she wanted.
An all time fav
an ANTHEM
One of her very best
It really was. I still love this record. I can't get on-board with the label blaming for it's performance. Epic did a great job, re-introducing her back to radio. And radio was ready to play her too. They wanted R&b Brandy not fake celine Dion.

You're so right about that! I remember Brandy praising the album before it came out, then as soon as she realized that the sales were low, she said she hated the album....and blamed Rodney. 'Departed' was such a great song, and it was released at the perfect time, in 08/09 there was a recession and many people were struggling with life, even Rodney said that he received many letters and emails from people thanking him for the song and saying how it helped them. Brandy only wants to embrace her music that hits, and distance herself from the her music that doesn't do well on the charts
Love it
Popdy>>>>>
I think the video sucked. And I don't think Brandy makes songs she don't like. She didn't like that it failed.
I really liked this as a single tbh. It was a nice return song.
and her most recent Top 40 hit btw. put some respect on Departed's name.

I have very mixed feelings about this song.
Brandy don't think she changed her tune about this record because of it's performance. Brandy wanted Locked in Love as the first single. The label had other ideas similar to what happened with black pepper. I can understand her frustrations when a song you didn't even asked to release fails.

Agreed! The timing was a bit off. It should've been released a few months earlier to do some damage. Releasing in the 4th quarter, is for the heavy hitter's imo.
To me it's a song everyone I know who likes pop music loves. Locked in Love is a good song. Too bad it didn't make the album.
I love it .. the lyrics hit hard in our day to me
Absolutely LOVE the song and have no mixed feelings about it. It's one of Brandy's best songs and consistently HITS!
Love the concept and melody, hate instrumentation tho... there's a part in the 2nd half of the song that is so hard on the ears . When it first came out and I was listening over and over it would give me a headache 🤕
IMO Rodney was sabotaging Queen on purpose
I always said Right Here performed acoustically would be fire. Would love to see her scale it back and do perform it in a more intimate setting.

Yes, she really has a lot of songs that need this treatment and this is one.
Tori Kelly kinda made the song more special when slowed down a bit with a less pop sound. If she gives it that Almost Doesn't Count kinda arrangement, I'd feel it more.

Rodney made the record sound like a Mary Mary track.
But I still like it a lot and want to see her performing it again. Would be a good way to close her show, like a Thank U to her fans.
Great song, even better when she sings it live. I think...the concept for the video was...a bit more ambitious than the budget available to her. But hey, this was Brandy during her rebuilding era so, it's fitting imo.
I liked the concept of the video but it wasn't executed well. I always say the Long Distance visuals would've been perfect for RHD
I'm gonna shake the table a bit. This song was a better single than PID and Baby Mama and is a better song too.

Actually outside of PID and BM, all of her first singles have been top-tier so their placement can be changed. TAOL is amazing but just not the best first single for that time.

But it aged horribly and sounds dated and corny now

Borderlines
My fave modern day singles
Brandy hasn't had a first single that yanked me up the way WAU did. Video was a bit disappointing, but sonically it was knocking me around the house.
Such a confident and assertive song!
When TAOL came out in 04 she def had me in a chokehold... the MTV Making The Video, Kanye being hot at the time and she had his feature and production... It was refreshing until the ball was dropped

And Pop was lowkey eating Right Here UP! She should've had at least 2 more pop smashes from Human but LD was lackluster.

TAOL was cute at the time to me but nothing to wow me. Listening to ha now tho..
:shook: :shook: :shook:
Its POP royalty, Brandy, her team and label just haven't known how to sell a song since her NSN era.
I want her to perform this again and add some hard gogo knock, make it a little more urban and lower the key then go high at the end.
:receipts:
I really wish Bran would have had her Good Girl Gone Bad/ Rated R era and said FUCK the critics.

I love Put it Down too. Borderline is a great song but definitely not for the masses. I miss hearing Brandy on the radio and in the mainstream which she was for PiD. I heard the song in Philly a lot. Miss them days...
I really wish Brandy dropped Drum Life as a single in 09, that would've been her best first single to me
:stressed:
The song that made me a stan
Sometimes I do wonder what would've happened if Brandy just stuck with Timbaland and worked with him exclusively on her 5th album instead of going back to Darkchild.
