Title: I'm moving to SF
Post by: Bigmacthawoppa on February 04, 2016, 11:37:08 AM
So, born and raised in Raleigh NC, I'm moving to the Bay Area at the end of this month. My bf got a job in Redwood City and I'm interviewing for a position outside of San Jose. I'm scared y'all  :plzstop:

I've been to San Francisco once and it was cool. Went to the gay bars and the gorls were kind of rude tbh. Anyone live out there with any advice for me??

Fffff thanks gorls.

Rig, I actually really enjoyed the city. When I go to gay bars I usually get shaded by one fag or another. I'm not sure what the deal is but it happens here too. Ended up talking to some bitches and got stuck hanging out with them. It was my bday when I went and I turned 29 and they were tryin me for my age n mess.

Anywho, the people in the city were actually really nice. Caught me off guard, I was expecting a New York mess.

I forgot they could smoke there and it caught me off guard when I was waiting in line at a bar and this guy just lit up a joint  :plzstop:

ASdfghjfgGSDF  :plzstop:

Problem is we have two pitbulls so we have to find a place that'll allow them too. When I first saw the prices I was like, Absofuckinglutely NOT. Just on principle alone. We might have to live a ways out of the city for our dogs, but even then the prices are still high AF  :-/

Yeah, for a 2 bedroom. It's crazy. People I talked to said once you get there and meet people there are good deals to be found. But as an outsider looking you're gonna pay high prices.

I never understand what the deal is with landlords and pets, specifically dogs. :plzstop: If they're well trained then it shouldn't be a problem.

Seriously. I'm like gorl we're giving you a deposit for each one and I have damns references from my dogs. WTF  :plzstop:

So, born and raised in Raleigh NC, I'm moving to the Bay Area at the end of this month. My bf got a job in Redwood City and I'm interviewing for a position outside of San Jose. I'm scared y'all  :plzstop:

I've been to San Francisco once and it was cool. Went to the gay bars and the gorls were kind of rude tbh. Anyone live out there with any advice for me??

SF is a lot of fun, but it's very expensive. I always have a good time when my friends and I go up there, but it can feel pretty congested and cramped. The city itself is only like 7 miles by 7 miles.

Oh and there are a ton of crazy homeless people :plzstop:

Oh gorl I forgot we were goin to get some food while we were there and passed a homeless guy takin a dookie outside his tent  :plzstop:

That sounds like when I went to go pick up my cousin from Baltimore and some woman pulled her pants ALL the way down and took a shit in plain sight.

I was like  :mmyulost: to my cousin: "sis if u don't hurry ahp and get out here so we can leave"

I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna do after I graduate.  :plzstop: I'm pret' sure I won't be able to afford living in SanFran.  :overit:

Just find a job you want and go wherever it is. Once you get that experience then you can start picking and choosing exactly what and where you want to be.

Took me a min to figure it out tbh

I've been applying to summer and spring internships like crazy ... working on my cover letter, resume and my portfolio.  :plzstop:

I just hope I like what ever job I end up with ... and of course I hope it pays well and the people are cool and all.

You'll find something good, just don't get discouraged (like me). Also if it seems like a bad fit don't waste your time. I ended up at Duke for 5 years hating my life b/c I thought the experience would look good on my resume  :plzstop:

Omg Duke University? What were you teaching?

Yeah, but I wasn't teaching. Couldn't make it through that much school  :dead:. I worked in primate research.

Duke is a good school tho so it will still look good on your resume.  :howfestive: Is that where you graduated as well?

Oh gorl no ma'am, I could've NEVER afforded it. Went to NC State. Thought about getting my Master's at Duke when I worked there but by the time I quit I hated tht damns place.

Ok So I live in Oakland and have lived in the bay area for most of my life except when I lived in LA for 3 years after undergrad. Since your BF job is going to be in Redwood City and you are looking for a job in San Jose then you might as well live on the peninsula. It wouldn't make sense to live in the east bay, because you would want to shoot yourself everyday if you had to commute. Your best bet is San Jose, Foster City, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Moutain View, San Mateo or even Santa Clara. I have 2 dogs too, so it's going to take some work to find a place and you might have to pay a higher deposit. $4500 sounds really high unless you are looking in San Francisco proper. Otherwise if you guys are looking at a 1 bed room then you should be able to find a place for under 3K. San Jose is BIG and that's probably your best bet. Just stay out the east side there are a shit load of gangs over there and it's kind of grimy. These fucking hipsters and gentrification are pushing up the prices all over the bay area. But one word of advice is when you find a place jump on it as fast as you can. Set some google alerts for new apartment listings in the city you think you want to live in that way you can have as much of a head start as possible.

Maybe it's because I live in the UK but SF, well Cali in general, seems like such a fascinating place to live.

Wouldn't mind moving to the US if I found a job there after I graduated.

If you don't have a car then you'll need to get one or find a place close to Caltrain. Bart only runs to Millbrae so Caltrain and bus are the only public transportation options.
Here's the caltrain map http://www.caltrain.com/stations/systemmap.html

What I find Hilarious is that all these kids straight from college want to move to SF then when they get here realize that even if you're making 115k that living in the city will have your ass broke as fuck.

Good Luck and if you have any other questions about living here or options just PM me. My boyfriend is originally from San Jose, so he knows all about the South Bay.

I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life, happy to answer any questions you have.

I actually work in Redwood City too. Maybe your boif and I will be coworkers! If you can, try to find a place in San Jose. The rent there is much cheaper than anything in SF and most of the Peninsula. Plus, why suffer through a long commute when you can make your boyfriend do it instead? Lmao!

You better invite me to the housewarming mess!
