I can't even think of another reggae/soca/culture influenced artist that is so mainstream and massive.
Has there ever been a female artist like her?

And really it's about more than making it a hit or not
It's about whether or not you're convincing singing that genre

I think Jazmine could sing over some country mess and be convincing. May not be a hit but that doesn't mean she isn't versatile.

Rih can do pop ballads, dance chunes, electric beats, traps beats, reggae beats, rock beats

She's amazing

And faggots The reason I said Mo is because she does a lot different sounds too

Pop Ballads like for You I will
R&B ballads like Love All Over
Old School beats like ETM
Trap/Club records like Do Me Like That and Beat Drop
Pop tunes like Taxi
Gospel records like Searching, Bigger than You and I, &'James Fortunes song
Country style songs like I Miss Music

She has potential for sure but I agree she been on the same nigga shit since '03

No one side-eyes her as she skips from genre to genre.
It's just seamless.

Idk

Well based on charts

All of Beyonce's albums have gone #1

Idk

Lemonade is kinda the most critically acclaimed album of the year

So she gets both sales and acclaim
when she genre shifts

Just my 2 sense not trying to start any mess

I don't know about Lemonade. I think the production has some degree of versatility, but I don't think the vocal interpretation was all that versatile.

That Mary J Blige wouldn't dare touch...

The point is... who can genre hop, seamlessly... BEATs are apart of a damn genre, so this "beat hopping" stuff is apart of it.

What does Mary have to do with anything?

Rihanna has always been mostly Pop until Talk That Talk. Of course she can sing a Pop song.

g

But not everyone can do a POP song and get away with it...
That's the point. That's why Mary was brought up.

Rihanna and Taylor both do POP songs. But Taylor can't do every Rihanna song and SELL IT. Like "Work".

Trend is the style of a song...
Not so much the genre of a song...

I'm talking about genres only.
And although yes, POP is IN now, Rih still switches it up.

So why did the general public latch on Rihanna's typical reggae mess "Work" and not the other records?

And what song completely out of her usual genre Urban/Pop has been a hit?

The same reason why her latest POP song debuted in the TOP 10 after "WORK" spent 9 weeks at #1. Hits more than misses. But she still slays them.

And Rih's main genres will always dominate her hits. That goes without saying. No artist that we've mentioned in here that are versatile has had countless hits for their "other genres they dapple in", but they can SLAY THEM and giving the focus and attention, go all the way. Rih has slayed reggae-pop-dance-hiphop-r&b, etc.

The same way Bey can be versatile on an album, that didn't produce hits from that versatility (yet), and still be counted/respected.

Also... What is your definition of versatile? You didn't answer it.

Rockstar 101 flopped
California King Bed flopped (Pop record anyway)
She's been doing records like We Found Love since her 3rd album (Don't Stop The Music & half of GGGB falls under the same category)

Maybe 4,5 seconds, but without Paul McCartney on it would you consider it versatile?

The foundation of all her music is pretty much Pop with some Urban influences. She dibbles and dabbles but she's never abandoned her foundation completely and fully tackled another genre.

Keep in mind, being versatile to me is being able to SELL (convincingly) that particular song/beat/music/lyric/groove,etc. you're singing.

So why did the general public latch on Rihanna's typical reggae mess "Work" and not the other records?

And what song completely out of her usual genre Urban/Pop has been a hit?

:rudone:

4,5 secs gives u a folk rock, rockstar 101 is self explanatory, we found love is the ultimate dance record, California king bed is a country record, i mean do we have to sit here and go thru the hits :dead:

Rockstar 101 flopped
California King Bed flopped (Pop record anyway)
She's been doing records like We Found Love since her 3rd album (Don't Stop The Music & half of GGGB falls under the same category)

Maybe 4,5 seconds, but without Paul McCartney on it would you consider it versatile?

The foundation of all her music is pretty much Pop with some Urban influences. She dibbles and dabbles but she's never abandoned her foundation completely and fully tackled another genre.

So have to fully tackle a genre to be versatile?
Is that your definition?

What's your definition, Drais?

So have to fully tackle around genre to be versatile?
Is that your definition?
RIGHT! I guess she needs to become a full fledge country artist before we can say versatile. :dead:

You two are the ones who said she COMPLETELY changes genres.

Y'all act like she's Bjork or something.

She hasn't done anything that Bey Ci or Nicki haven't done. Their stans aren't calling them genre shape shifters.  :dead:

Your whole argument is that she's the MOST versatile currently. Wouldn't that imply she needs to do more than dibble and dabble here and there like most artists out already do?

And outside of 45 seconds the other "genres" she tackled flopped on The Hot 100.

Like Yummy said if you wanted a Rih praise thread you could've done better.

Bey can get credit when it's due.
Rih can't ever seem to get credit on here for anything.
The song "Work" alone is not something any random female artist out right now can GET AWAY with it and sell convincingly.

Same goes for the Shakira duet. The Rihs want her to be an "artiste" so bad but she's still taking pages out of Bey's book.

:dead:

You guys hate for this girl be coloring your judgements
Good lord

Your whole argument is that she's the MOST versatile currently. Wouldn't that imply she needs to do more than dibble and dabble here and there like most artists out already do?

And outside of 45 seconds the other "genres" she tackled flopped on The Hot 100.

Like Yummy said if you wanted a Rih praise thread you could've done better.

the MOST versatile is relative MY LOVE...
relative...
:uhh:
key word "relative" to climate of the industry

you really think BEY did some DEEP genre connecting with her latest SLAY?
:uhh:
But relatively speaking, she was versatile...

That's the whole point.

Stop taking this to 100. Chill.

Nobody is on 100.

You're just not making any sense and rambling like you always do.

"upset! hatred!"

The bitch is just not very versatile.  :dead:

"not making sense!"

PLEA...
typical defense.

Your judgement is clouded and YOU'RE not acknowledging the points in this thread.
Too hell bent on changing someone's else OPINION. And YES, you do take statements to the EXTREME... and add your SPIN on them... clear as fucking day.

Well she is experimenting with different genres.

So does every single other artist mentioned in here which is why nobody agrees.

You can pound on your keyboard all you want but at the end of the day Rihanna isn't some genre shifting chameleon like you're trying to make her out to be.

Just delusional honestly

Well thats the thing another big part of what he was asking was believability and NO ONE out of the popular girls can do it like rih. I don't know why ur so hell bent on MY OPINION :dead:
Im not trying to convince u otherwise.  U were free to come in and voice your own,  not understanding why u have to prove mine wrong. Its MY OPINION  :kii:

g

You're both basing believability on chart performance and yet every song outside of the "norm" for her you posted has flopped except 45 seconds, so obviously nobody believes or buys her genre hopping.

And yeah I'm voicing my opinion but you're pissed as always when someone attacks Rih

"hatred! disgust!"

I thought I made it clear by saying not hopping on a EDM beat with some indie producer.

Rihanna clearly dabbles in genres and that's cute but so do countless other artists.

IDK why the Rihs have this idea that people think of her as some eclectic artist. Most of her hits are Pop/Urban records.
