I think what's unsettling, is how fast the car was going or steep that driveway is...
To cause that much damage to him... even tho it was a brick mailbox.

He must've gotten out of his car to lock the gate or something and the truck built a lot of momentum at the last minute.

Not if his back was facing the gate and the car was facing away from the gate but down the slope and backed into him. You wouldn't hear the car because I'm sure it was already running..
