I just can't with ppl acting like they're genuinely interested in female rap when Nicki had to dig the entire genre out of the mud.
The Queen of rap wasn't even an afterthought until Nicki came in. The last hit from the previous Queen, Lil Kim, came out in 2003. Between that time and Nicki's first radio hit in 09, there was no sign of a female rapper dominating consistently and making a brand out of their name. Lil Mama and Missy had like 1 hit in 2007 and 2005, and that was it :dead:
Clearly, for 6 long years, niggas wasn't interested in revere a female rapper like they would a Rihanna or Beyonce. Now everybody wanna rush to name who's the next Queen of rap? That's really FAKE

I think it's weird/fake that the gorls wanna quickly pass the torch off to someone else, when there was only one person lighting that bitch up for the past decade, and then before that, the general public proved they weren't interested in a female rap record past 1 or 2 songs. Yeah we can compare sales - that's where equivalents come into play.
An unfair comparison would be not including Cardi's STREAMING equivalents - which are a huge factor in 2018.
There are rap artists still hitting those numbers that Nicki hit for her first week debut so it is completely possible.
Even with streaming though things aren?t quite the same tho sis.

So the "back in the day things were different" type of argument really wouldn't apply, as she came after them.
Both for the most part were very urban female rappers.

But, you were downplaying the feat as if it wouldn't count as much since she did more "pop" music.
She wasn't as "urban" as Shim or Missy.... both of whom were pop culture icons.
But, we have Monica swearing up and down how "real" and R&B she is and she's no stranger to a Richard Marx remake.
So, is it as impressive or NOT that she hit those numbers? Or should we not pay it that much mind or give her that many props for her accomplishments AS an R&B artist since she dipped into a different sound?
Or, is she an R&B artist who happened to experiment and go into different lanes AS an R&B artist?
Sis I wasn?t arguing about technicalities and what to count or not
I brought up Nicki doing pop simply to make the point that her bubbly fun songs helped get her a wider audience . Hence them being her biggest songs . That?s why her numbers were massive. Missy and Kim were crossed over but they weren?t doing bubble gum sing alongs
Boom ba doom doom bass! I mean :dead:
I?m not saying it takes anything from her . But she was smart and strategic about how to reach the masses from jump. That?s what helped her numbers become so massive.
All this Monica mess is irrelevant tbh :dead:
When you do pop of course it?s easier for them to become hits and garner sales. I never said anything was wrong with it

Yes, you were trying to take away from the fact that Nicki's debut was the highest selling first week for a female rapper ever.
It was very "Yeah, BUT....." That's detraction. "Not really doe, cuz......" is taking away from her a bit whether you realize it or not.
And yes Monica is relevant because if someone were to say "Monica was such a successful R&B artist with so many hits" - of course they're measuring her success based on the compared success of others who were in THAT lane of R&B. So if someone were to say "Yeah she was more successful than Lil Mo I guess BUT she did more pop stuff, so that's why she sold more. Lil Mo is more gutta and ghetto lolz ", that would be a) saying that Monica doesn't REALLY deserve that recognition by b) saying that she wasn't "REALLY" an R&B artist.
Your guess is that "pop" singles helped Nicki's album sales and that's fine but, her debut first week was still the best for a female rapper. I'm sorry but if there's any buts or not really cuz...'s that follow that statement, it's detraction.
This whole statement you made is based on the assumption that I was detracting from Nicki?s success or numbers when I wasn?t. Sorry it may sound that way to you but I wasn?t . In fact, I said it was smart how she played her career. She dabbled in different sounds. One being POP. They were her biggest hits and that was smart.
Monica has done the same. But what does she have to do with this?
We can both agree that doing ?Popular? music will help gain you ?popularity? or atleast expose you to a much wider audience. That?s what those particular Nicki songs were and did.
Nothing wrong with it .
However that heavily contributes to her sales and fan base. And that?s not a detraction that?s an explanation on why someone was so successful .

You basically said "Well yeah she sold more BUT ..."
It was this whole bob-n-weave mess you were doing around the facts. First it was "Well Cardi's in a different time" (when streaming equivalents are in place to make up for the SHIFT of pure sales to streaming)
People still listen to and enjoy music just as much as they did back when Nicki released for first album. Only thing that's changed is the METHOD - which is why digital equivalents are now counted for certifications. Spotify is free to download.
Then it was "Well yeah she sold more than Shim and Missy BUT..." . I'm sorry but the only facts we have are the numbers . Anything else is a guess - in regards to what may have contributed to the album sales (more "pop" sounds, etc).
Nicki was no damn Jason DeRulo or Flo Rida . She wasn't going platinum off of ringtones and 99 cent singles and then going wood once her album released. So to put her in that category (which you are basically doing) is completely unfair.
She did what she did as a female rapper. Period.
