Title: My relative was a civil rights leader.
Post by: Herb. on November 09, 2015, 10:00:43 AM
I swore I wouldn't dig into my great grandfather's (grandmother's father) side of the family (avoiding ANY research regarding European ancestry for obvious reasons). But I'm glad I did. My ancestor, Clifton DeBerry, was a popular civil rights activist and politician. He has his own Wiki mess :plzstop: He was closely associated with Malcolm X.

DeBerry is my mother's maiden name, and I found this information on our family's history page.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifton_DeBerry

My mother's side of the family fucking slays.  :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:

I'm so glad I stopped putting it off and finally dug in. My grandmother is going to be elated to hear this.

My great grandfather's family is originally from France (with African mixed in).
It's info on our family page that suggests relation to the King and Queen of France.
(I'll have to dig into this more before I can comfortably accept that).

A lot of this makes sense......
My mother's side of the family is full of professionals.
We have lawyers, teachers, ..... there's a lot of SMARTS on this side of the family
Not to say my paternal side is "dumb" , but you get what i mean. my dad's side is just more simple. Which is something I love (I was just singing my great grandfather's praises last night).

Herb who is he to you?
I'm calling my grandmother tonight to get the exact relation, before I call it. But he's definitely part of my family, they kept very meticulous records of our history. I mean, down to the first arrival, to slavery, to relations, to why the name is spelled the way it is. :dead:

https://vsford.wordpress.com/2012/08/29/deberry-family-from-slavery-to-present-2/

They kinda did that. Just further testament of how organized they are. I wish I had some mess like this for my dad's side. Like everything, right there. :dead:

Even the address of the plantation where my ancestors worked :uhh:

nnnnnnnnnnnn

The more I read , the more I am amazed and fucking inspired.

Clifton ran for president twice :stressed: he was the first black man to be elected by a political party to run for office.

:stressed: :stressed:

I'm glad my Granny pushed me to do this. I was so focused on great grandma Chief and very much gave a middle finger to anything that had to do with European heritage.

But in all this excitement, I also find sadness. I think I've found the pictures of the men who owned my ancestors. And now know the details of how they were given to their family members as part of land in a will.

Very bittersweet, but I knew I wouldn't find a bunch of roses and daffodils digging into this side of the family.

It's one thing to know these things existed, but it's another thing to possibly be looking at these people.  :'(
