WALLACE, Louisiana -- A group of black medical students posed in front of the slave quarters of a Louisiana plantation for a powerful photo.

"Standing in front of the slave quarters of our ancestors, at The Whitney Plantation, with my medical school classmates. We are truly our ancestors' wildest dreams," Sydney Labat posted to Twitter.

The photo, featuring Labat and 14 of her Tulane University classmates in their white coats, was posted to Twitter and liked more than 65,000 times.

"I think I speak for myself and my classmates that it was an extremely humbling experience, to say the least," Labat told Good Morning America. "We would not be here without the strength and determination of those enslaved and their strength to live and to press on."

She said she credits her ancestors' resilience for her ability to pursue an education.

The Whitney Plantation in Wallace is one of the only plantations in the state with an exclusive focus on enslaved people, according to its website.

maybe just the message that they are successful in the medical field but will always be humbled by their roots/ancestry
Or that their slave ancestors would be proud of how much they have accomplished
Something like that

Yea, none of that makes sense.

And it's the "powerful" and "we are our ancestors wildest dreams" assertions that's got me like
:calmdownsis:

Harriet and friends weren't sitting around in a pile of med school rejection letters, that wasn't their dream boy :dead:

But I get it! They're doing good, for their head on str8. And that's good.

But I'm not gonna clap any harder for them, than I am for a young black male or female that works at dollar tree, pays their bills, and may take 1 or 2 classes at the local community college to get where they need to get in this system that is so unfair to us. White accomplishments just don't equate to Black achievements to me anymore.

Now what would I clap hard for?

I would go BANANAS for them to caption this photo "Providing free medical care for all families and victims of slavery."

End of soapbox.

how is being a doctor a "white accomplishment"? The point is it's a high
Paying salaried job where they can provide for themselves and their families, which is far from being a slave

Our ancestors dream was to never even be part of this American system. They didn't want to be here at all :plzstop:

I feel like a lot of blacks who consider themselves "far and above" being a slave, would be quite shocked if one of our ancestors visited them and gave them the real of this American system :dead:

THOSE were our ancestors

Sometimes we look at our own past and buy into the reformed savage narrative that the slave owners tried to sell.

They actually took our knowledge and put us to work doing menial tasks.

But .... whatever, I'll go with the flow

they probably would not be shocked about that
clearly slaves were intelligent and creative, they were just bound in chains, not compensated for their work, not considered human etc
and now these descendants can own land, white ppl have to go to them for medical care, no one is whipping them and making them pick cotton
It's clearly a huge difference

How many doctors, lawyers, Tyler Perry's or Oprah's do we need before the narrative changes from, "oh we're "allowed" to prosper", to "I'm going to shed white American standards of success, and do my part for my people"

And I can guarantee if I ask them to offer free or reduced care to blacks. "Oh them niggas need to get it themselves, we're "allowed" to do it, I did it!"

I mean, that thought process is not working and never has good sir.

Ok let's make it simple.

Our ancestors wouldn't approve of photo-ops

Why don't we just make it a resort,  Complete with rides on the Underground Railroad and gift shops filled with cotton candy and souvenir shackles!

And don't forget to throw in a Whipping Tree Selfie booth, no trip to Slave Land would be complete without it

You kinda gettin at it a bit :butwait!:

I def see your logic 100%

You're speaking a lot to that "we're our ancestors' dream" line...And I did side eye it as well. Just a bit.

How do we know what their dreams were? Did they really want to be in the same positions as those who enslaved them? Because it was usually people of wealth who had slaves. Not regular degular White folks - those were the slave catchers, not owners.

A surgeon, J. Marion Sims, actually used female slaves to further his research in gynecology. Basically used them by performing invasive experiments on their genitalia for his own agenda.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/made-by-history/wp/2018/06/04/american-medicine-was-built-on-the-backs-of-slaves-and-it-still-affects-how-doctors-treat-patients-today/

Yeah it's digging a little deeper below the surface of it all but I think that's always healthy.

I think it's great to celebrate Black progress as a whole....but I'm also about being super mindful of things we say..to and about each other.
!!!!!!

You get it.

And we definitely have to watch the message we're sending to Da'Quan and Tyrone. To me it's a very sub-conscious message that is sent to them from teen years.

It's dangerous because as a Black, high level American education became the "dream". wearing a white lab coat gets you praise and at the core, accepted.

Medical School is very expensive, exclusive, and difficult :dead:

Hispanics and Asians and Sand Niggers will open a nail salon, massage parlor, landscaping company, restaurant, or corner store in OUR neighborhoods and we look down on it because they're servicing us. While still pouring our dollars into their business.

So What do we do with our youth that don't fit, and won't ever fit into this American system of accolades?

Ray wants us to show them this picture and say sorry you let your ancestors down :dead:

well educated and intelligent are 2 different things
But what are you really getting at? It kinda isn't making sense to tear ppl down for bettering themselves and being proud of it
What should Blacks do instead of going to college in order to become at least moderately successful and wealthy enough to live happily, debt-free etc?

Ok, how many black ppl you know that CAN actually own land, or afford a good college education? Realistically.

And we just found out concrete proof that whites PAY for Ivy League degrees :dead:

And let's also admit the fact that HBCU education isn't even black education, rather a diet white institution that provides Great Valu degree programs. That's not what Booker T envisioned :dead:

Yea they're not in chains or being whipped, but we can't act like this is for the good of Black culture anymore.

I mean, that thought process is not working and never has good sir.
well educated and intelligent are 2 different things
But what are you really getting at? It kinda isn't making sense to tear ppl down for bettering themselves and being proud of it
What should Blacks do instead of going to college in order to become at least moderately successful and wealthy enough to live happily, debt-free etc?
Looks can be deceiving buddy, and that's what we as blacks fall into, the look of things.

I guarantee you that Every person in this pic is less wealthy and more poor than Reek is.
They'll spend their entire life working shifts and paying back for this "achievement"

White ppl don't pay what we pay for college and education :dead:

I'm not hating or looking down on their achievements, bravo to them.

But I'm not buying into what they're selling tbh

Who are the youth that "don't fit in", and what separates them from these ppl pictured? I don't know any of these ppl and have no evidence that they have any kind of advantages or privileges
If anything showing any of our youth this should motivate them to see that they can do this if they want

And they would be shocked to find out carpenters, doctors, priests, and architects lived in that house and al over other plantations :dead:

THOSE were our ancestors

Sometimes we look at our own past and buy into the reformed savage narrative that the slave owners tried to sell.

They actually took our knowledge and put us to work doing menial tasks.

But .... whatever, I'll go with the flow

"Med School! I's good at book learning' now!" :dead:
they probably would not be shocked about that
clearly slaves were intelligent and creative, they were just bound in chains, not compensated for their work, not considered human etc
and now these descendants can own land, white ppl have to go to them for medical care, no one is whipping them and making them pick cotton
It's clearly a huge difference

They were left out and didn't fit in.

Not saying anyone should break the law, and everybody here knows I'm REALLY hard on black ppl.

But it would be an oversight to say lots of the young men and women that slip through the cracks of the current education system were just bad apples.

The logic of "oh just go to med school! These kids did it!"

is a very southern and a very white view of blacks. "Why can't you just conform nigger! Be a good lil colored!"

Could have definitely made different choices and not ended up behind bars. It didn't have to be med school but something legal. A lot of ppl really sell themselves short and make BS excuses. Look at Jay Z

Like how millions are in jail for selling weed, and now I see white and Arab owned dispensary's everywhere now and we're STILL locked up. It's a billion dollar industry now and we're still locked up

You think ppl were selling weed because it's the fun thing to do.

Ok I'm not getting what the point is of this rant
These kids that "didnt fit in" and chose to break the law by selling drugs
Could have definitely made different choices and not ended up behind bars. It didn't have to be med school but something legal. A lot of ppl really sell themselves short and make BS excuses. Look at Jay Z
Thank GOD he never got caught selling drugs because he's very intelligent and didn't need to be a crack dealer although he didn't know it at the time
I beg your pardon... Jay Z?
:thatssowendy:

And being black in America is not a BS excuse at all

See ... and that's the type of message pics and things like this send.

Afro and everybody else understood perfectly the underlying issue I was bringing to light.

You're so Americanized
They don't want you at the country club Ray :plzstop:
Being Black is not the reason for dealing illegal and physically harmful drugs. That's the defeatist attitude that had these niggas giving up and turning to the streets. SMH
and I don't want to go to the country club, I'll go to the club with these doctors pictured in here
Weed is physically harmful?! :uhh:

The point was they threw thousands of your ppl in jail for something harmless, and to add insult to that injury they are now themselves profiting.

admit that and be cleansed of this Uncle Tom spirit at once! :uhh:

Also, White ppl didn't invent education in a classroom IDK why we're giving them so much in here
Ppl all across Africa are well educated and have always been going back to ancient times
what are we saying in here?
Boy I was the one who told you that in here, so stop  :plzstop:

White ppl sure didn't invent knowledge. But They DID invent this American educational system :uhh:

What's your address bro?
I wanna send you some books to read to help you out

Or your email, cause audiobooks might be better, that way you don't have to worry about words and sounding them out.
boy, knowledge is knowledge
why are you even on this nitpicking subject of the American system? That's not what the point of the pictures were or their captions

Who are the youth that "don't fit in", and what separates them from these ppl pictured? I don't know any of these ppl and have no evidence that they have any kind of advantages or privileges
If anything showing any of our youth this should motivate them to see that they can do this if they want
Woah! You're just full of assumptions today huh! Lol
:calmdownsis:

yes they did, and those ppl did things on purpose knowing what the consequence was, when there are thousands of other ways to survive that are legal. You have no point here

Don't get mad cause You simply can't think on the level to understand my point ..... lolz!

No shade, but you're like a lot of nig- I mean blacks

Put some green paper or anything else shiny in front of you and all logic just goes out the damn window :dead:

I never imagined it would be hard for a fully grown black nigger to understand the plight and unfairness of the American educational system.

A bunch of Becky's just went to jail over buying Ivy League degrees, did your parents buy you one?

Now I'm finding out you don't even understand the complexities of the legal system and how that was stacked against us as well.

Like ... please wake up bro bro :kii:

so the American educational system is *GASP* unfair
and these ppl still overcame all of that and you can't be happy for them? Where is the logic?
The legal system is stacked against us so you make excuses for the ppl who decide to defy that system purposely and give whites a reason to use it against them?
You're clearly asleep and putting others to sleep with you
