Yes, and the fact that it's on Twitter doesn't help. It's become painfully obvious to me more and more that place is a cesspool for problematic people to vent when they really need some serious therapy.
I think these are discussions we should have amongst ourselves and not in front of crackas on twitter :19k:

Umm hun. I think your missing the MARK, no one is ashamed of being from the hood or where they grew up. At least I'm not.
But I'm damn sure not gonna turn my head and act like that's the place to be and put on this pedestal. I'm not turning my nose up at anyone who wasn't raised in those environments and telling them they not apart of an entire race because they didn't have to experience what majority of that race went through, Because that was the INITIAL discussion is about. Blaming black people solely for all their ills is low-hanging fruit. It's easy to beat down a perpetual, raciali bottom caste. What I don't think some may realize is that "crabs in a barrel" statement in regards to black people actually reinforces anti black racism imo. A barrel is not the natural habitat for crabs. If you have a pot full of crabs in boiling water, and they claw at each other to escape, do you think they're doing so because they hate each other, or because the water is hot and killing them?
James Baldwin said it best when he said to be a black person in America and relatively conscious means to be almost always in a state of rage. We have been in the boiling pot of white privilege for half a millennium and there's still much work to be done.

the crabs don't know they're crabs
and they don't know what a bucket is
but humans can understand that concept
and applying that to this analogy, you get a whole bunch of crabs who have gotten content clawing at each other.
beyond the issue of demon whites who put the "crabs" in this bucket.... the problem will always lie in the arena of, "how to get out."

I think it's important for Black people to just give one another a bit of space and have some understanding
Yes, Shalequa may be excited that she's moved into a predominately White neighborhood, but maybe she's excited for that opportunity because she feels it's the safest place for her kids to grow up, and because that neighborhood has the best school district for them... based on her research. That's just a mom being a mom.
And yes, Dashawn may be proud he's from the hood, but being proud of that doesn't mean he's celebrating poverty or broken homes. It could simply mean that as part of his childhood, it holds a special place in his heart. And he doesn't want to let go of that - no matter how "far" he goes in life.
We just need to be more understanding of one another and a little less quick to throw labels on tea.
Quote from: indigenous nigga on December 28, 2019, 02:13:58 PM
I know a Black woman who posts so many of her moments on social media .... She posts a lot about her house (which is in a great neighborhood), her great job, a lot of gifts, sneakers, etc. etc.
I've seen people judge and talk about her, and I've had to interrupt them to INJECT some understanding into their conversation about her.
Yeah she does all of this, but maybe she's just celebrating what she has. She was a young Black girl kicked out of her house at 16 for being pregnant.
What I see is a woman that is simply in awe of what she's accomplished, in spite of what expectations may have been for her future - expectations set by herself or others.
Personally, I'm not the type to post about belongings and "floss" or whatever. But have some understanding for this sister . You know her story.
She's living within her means. SHe can afford everything she posts, so I don't see an issue with her sharing. Let her celebrate her tea. This is a dream come true for her.

Materialism and the overall worship of money is a big reason why people feel jealous when others explain that they didn't grow up in the hood.
If you don't hold money and material things in such high regard it won't bother you when you hear others don't really have a problem with that, or have never had a problem with it. Unless they're obviously just being a dickhead or something.

The biggest issue is that black people still try so hard to impress white people. A lot of our problems aren't problems and some of our problems we don't wanna talk about because we are scared whites are listening.
It always goes back to white people. It's like even when we're not putting them on top of the hierarchical ladder we still do it subconsciously. It's like how niggas will get in a few bad relations and start denouncin the whole black race and talking about going to white people yet Molly and Brian kept breaking up all year because Brian can't stop fucking new sorority girls and Molly is addicted to meth.

People have whole apartments in other states on a $15/hour wage. Paying $500-600 for an apartment in a relatively decent area. It's just not realistic up here. Not even to rent a room in someone else's apartment.
sis... :diddraispoot: where do they do that at?
Columbus, Ohio...for starters.
You can get an apartment for $599 with a den and fireplace
https://www.forrent.com/oh/columbus/cornerstone-crossing/09141t0
In a city that ranks higher than 85% of other areas in Ohio.

I just find this thread interesting because no disrespect black people typically make any area ghetto/hood. You can go into any suburban area that's predominantly black and see privileged kids pretending to be hood and street. I mean there is a viral video right now of it.
I don't understand the importance of debating hood verses valley because when the police pull you over they don't care where you grew up, you're a nigger still at the end of the day. Just a uppity nigger.

But what about people who try so hard to act like they can't relate to the hood?
I didnt grow up in the "hood" myself, but if you're a black person there is a 99.99% chance you have family in the hood, your parents or grandparents live/lived in the hood at some point of their lives. As a people we come from recent poverty. Some people move from the hood, or never lived in the "hood" but also try to remove themselves from the culture.
Google Beyonce's childhood homes, yet no one ever accuses her or Solange of this. People take the Black card away from people who act as if because they didn't grow up in the hood they have no concept of what Collard Greens are.
Lol beyonce has to hide her hood ratchetness.....middle class or not

but I wanna talk to you guys in here
because you guys have to realize that there ARE actually Hillary & Carlton Banks out there who honestly don't know or view it that way because of upbringing.
and the reason is, like Rig said, it's ok to be proud of where you come from, a struggle builds a person up, but to glorify the NEGATIVE attributes .... and try to make it the basis of an entire culture. Well yea, you're gonna have some blk ppl feel very alienated from that.
The "hood" & the "projects" are not synonymous words to "where blk ppl live". And THAT's where the disconnect comes in. That's why every generation blk ppl take less pride in their mess.
It's subconsciously assigned stereotype onto yourself. And I've seen it on this board. Von actually got attacked for not liking Watermelon
Like ... we laugh at the shit Kamala does, but that's what the general public wants. Does nobody watch CNN. They ask questions like "what does it take to get the black vote?", or "how are they gonna get black out to vote!"
And then they cut to ....

and then blk ppl turn around and wonder why this issue exists. I guess it must really make ppl feel good and proud that their entire perceived contribution to society they are forced to live in is summed up by how seasoned a fckn porkchop is. I know for sure it makes white ppl feel good. :uhh:
To me blk isn't the "hood". BLK is resilience & creativity! The same way a new dance or spin on language can be created, is the same way a cure for cancer can be created. And that's the power of blk ppl
not all the superficial stuff ppl rep about the hood.
Cause trust and believe, our reality right now is ... if the police officer does't kill us, then we might get gunned down in our own "hood". So I mean rep all day, but I'd start changing some mindsets as well

Your name choices have me howling

It's usually the ignorance and naivety that comes with the privilege that gets a side eye, but I guess it's easier for the Carlton Banks of the world to act like they can't be a little ignorant themselves.

It's the subculture. The creativity. The lingo. Like.... :disgusted:
I've never held a gun, sold drugs, or been arrested in my life...Nor did I surround myself with people who took joy in those things.
But I'm all about my hood culture. And there's an ART to representing and embracing it
All of my Black coworkers who were raised in the suburbs know where I'm from and that I love to rep it.
But they also know that I'm smart, approachable, ethical, a joy to be around and that I'm about my business. I can be all those things.
