I was talking with one of my white coworkers, we were discussing vacation plans and mess for 2016 and I expressed my desire to visit countries in Africa. He was like "OMG really? Why Africa? Are you sure :usureuok: , it's kind of dangerous over there...."
First of all, did you really just ask me why? Do you not see the color of my got damn skin :dead: Do you think black people popped out of nowhere in America? :dead: :dead: Secondly, I had to restrain myself from getting hood on him because I actually like him and I KNOW it's not his fault that he's that ignorant when it comes to Africa.
I politely schooled him and let him know how diverse the CONTINENT is. It's not one country, with one economy and one ruler. :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: I had to be straightforward with him and advise him NOT to let the images on television fool him. Yes those images are real but there are so many different sides to this CONTINENT. CONTINENT.
CONTINENT.
He still wasn't getting it so I changed the topic of our conversation before it went completely left. Cuz he was really upsetting me. It's one thing to misspeak out of ignorance, but it's another thing to remain close minded when the FACTS are being given to you. I was two minutes away from reading him and his got damn ancestors who brought me here to begin with.
The real danger for us began once we got off those got damn ships. If you really wanna talk about danger
The real danger is a black man behind the wheel of a car.
The real danger is strolling into the wrong neighborhood with a bag of Skittles in your hand.
Let's talk about danger!
!
I was talking to my white friends about visiting Africa one day maybe stay a while
And this bitch actually told me Africa is a place you vacation not live :usureuok:
Not sure why people think Africa is so bad

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
I can't blame them because there are many of us who are (understandably) ignorant of the continent and it's actually the place we descend from. :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: I can just imagine what white people think Africa is. :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:
But still. If I'm telling you what it is, shut the fuck up and listen. Don't argue with me.
That is the last thing any white person should be doing. If they want to remain cordial with me. :ohwow:
G
Africa isn't a place where people go 'to find themselves'
And pale people love criticising us but love vacationing in our countries and islands
nvm

On one hand you said you can understand why the person is ignorant of africa, then you're mad coz he hasn't 'got it' after one 'schooling'. lol. As if anything can be changed after one chat.
I'm sure you wouldn't understand and dispel your own ignorance of the Asian continent and middle eastern region and of the muslim-terrorist political agenda after one chat.
Change happens painstakingly slowly and only when its relaxed and positive.
Just relax Frodo! Don't let your new interest make u angry, enjoy it and converse with others with love and patience.
You're not black, you don't live in America, so you'll never know how it feels for a white person whose ancestors who were responsible for bringing you here, to tell you that Africa is dangerous place that should not be visited.
Don't tell me what I should and shouldn't be angry about. You damn sure got in your feelings on here when people assumed you were a terrorist. You didn't sit and "understand" their position and wait for the educational cards to play out. Zuzu, don't do it.
Furthermore, it's not an "interest". This is who I am, biologically and socially -- black. A descendant of Africans. You really have some nerve but I'm going to stop before this goes completely left. Enjoy your Sunday.
Guys
It got fucking HORT in here
His comment was just really ignorant. Some emotions cannot be controlled. Feeling offended is one of them. Which is why I changed the topic of our conversation. I didn't curse him out, or call him names. I just chose to talk about something else because I clearly saw that him grasping the concept would not be something accomplished in the conversation we were having. And that's fine. We're still friends, I still like him.
So ZuZu's comments are absolutely unnecessary. I'm well aware that certain ignorance cannot be cured overnight.
i thought afrika was a state!1
like..wat?!
i jus hate talmbout tha moth' land wit alotta ppl
i keep my luv for it to myself!
Hell, I know Africans that are reluctant to go back, especially second-gen West Africans. Like you said, it's understandable.
My dad got my baby brother this book, he's 9 :dead:

Yea I've gotten the "omg why?" Question quite a bit. Even from doctors and nurses at the damn hospital when I went to get certain shots before the trip :dead: the ignorance is ridiculous
And :dead: I hate when people on this forum talk down to others as if they're children. ew
Afro you don't read and understand the massive contradiction and hypocrisy in what you write. Therefore i edited to say nvm coz its pointless trying to converse with you when you have a bee in your bonnet about something.
There is no contradiction in saying that his comments upset me, but at the same time it's understandable, which is why I continued our conversation, but switched the topic.
I never said that his views were NOT constructed by the representations of media. In fact, I took the time to recognize that they most likely are. This does NOT negate the fact that as a black person, conversing with a white person, I felt some type of way about him speaking of Africa in that way.
Again, you're not fucking black so you don't understand. Which is why it's probably best to keep your fucking mouth shut.
A contradiction would have been cursing him out, ending our conversation completely, cutting him off and labeling him as a racist. Then coming here to say "well, I understand". That is not what I did; that is not how I treated him. He didn't even KNOW I was offended.
Learn what contradiction is before you begin throwing the word out there.

Are u fucking kidding me. U claim understand how thoughts are influenced, but expect him to 'GET IT' after one chat. He doesn't and u seethe. Despite U changing the subject , u are still pissed that he is unable to get why the 'white boy' doesn't get it. Your own words. So stop fucking acting thick and get the point.
Do u GET IT after one chat when it comes to how ignorant you are about the rest of the world?
Chill the fuck out.
When did I say that I expected him to "get it"?
I said that I told him what I know about Africa, and he wasn't LISTENING to what I was saying. At that point, I found it pointless to continue and changed the discussion. In order for someone to learn, or grow , the first step is a willingness to accept information which counters and challenges your perceptions. He showed no willingness at that point in time.
What do you NOT get about that?

CASE IN FUCKING POINT
Read what you write. And don't start with swearing and being rude at me. I was VERY fucking polite when I was communicating with you.
There's no need of having this conversation with you. Or anyone other non-black person perched in Europe who takes issue with my "anger".
This ends our discussion.

A big reason why I didn't even bother to continue the discussion.
I had a friend who seriously thought "African" was a language.
The ignorance is crazy.
I think many African countries, if not every last one of them, are in fact very hard to digest for Westerners, so it is not like that intimidation is unwarranted, but for me having been in there as a child frequently it is second nature.
But if you have no relatives, friends or any other direct ties, it is not a easy breezy continent to just stroll by: climatically, socio-econically and culturally.
