You're basically messing with someone's money. And people get pretty ... "passionate" when you mess with their coins.

OR, the thief doesn't have any money to feed his kids and and this is his last attempt to do so. I think both side can have a really good reason to act like they did.

But at the end, violence isn't the solution. He should have call the cops and that's it.

Well, if he has kids, better a slap in the face for him and his family so he can go back to them
As opposed to being locked up, and them going to a foster home.
