to sit and actually have a conversation with a member of an oppressed group that you may not be very familiar with or have much direct experience with

Putting aside your own personal assumptions , theories. Shutting your mouth and listening. Being prepared to realize how ignorant and foolish some of your questions may be to them. Being prepared to be corrected . Accepting the correction .

Not allowing your pride or ego to get in the way.

Whether that group be black women, natives , black people in general ... if more people did this they would have a COMPLETELY different outlook.

So it's not so much about JUST having the conversation , but making sure your ego is in the back pocket  and ur humility is in the front pocket as u approach the table.

Project started: 2014 Wrapped up: 2024

Significant Discovery: First known Black American family of Kalmyk descent

Takeaways: Be prepared to pivot, even when you think you're on the right track. Be OK with being wrong so you can get things right.

Kalmyks are tribal Mongolic people who settled in Russia. It's estimated that only 300,000 Kalmyk descendants exist worldwide - with only 3,000 in America.

And one thing I must add is approaching the table realizing that you don't have a right or a "pass" to do what u want just because you have blood ties to the group

you are not truly family if you're not taking time to learn more so U can do better . U don't care .

all skinfolk ain't kinfolk .
