That's a good point, which is why I would have liked to see Ari Lennox and)or Victoria Monet perform. Both of their songs have fleshed out concepts and would translate well on stage. Additionally, their songs are better than a number of the songs that were performed.

Both ladies performed, but I did enjoy Normani's a bit more. Wild Side doesn't translate well live vocally (even tho she was lipping)

Chlo needs to clean up her dancing. I think she gets a bit too excited at times, but for her first performance she did well. She'll only get better.

But isn't what Chloe, Lil Nas X, and Normani did at the VMAs partly just shock and awe? In Lil Nas Xs case, he's admitted that he does certain things to spite the Christian community and others. And Normani engaged in what some might consider queer baiting. Chloe's break away from her more religious image is also a tried and true tactic to be seen as more mature or artistic/edgy.
