Pharrell spoke being embarrassed by the lyrics of Blurred Lines back in 2019

QuoteRevisiting the video isn't so fun for Pharrell. "Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place... I think 'Blurred Lines' opened me up," he told GQ. Pharrell says he didn't "get it" at first, because some women liked the song.

"...There were older white women who, when that song came on, they would behave in some of the most surprising ways ever... So when there started to be an issue with it, lyrically, I was like, What are you talking about? There are women who really like the song and connect to the energy that just gets you up. And I know you want it — women sing those kinds of lyrics all the time. So it's like, What's rapey about that?"

The discussion controversy made him aware of the subtly of misogyny, and his own blind spots as an artist.

"And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn't matter that that's not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women. And I was like, Got it. I get it. Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel. Even though it wasn't the majority, it didn't matter. I cared what they were feeling, too. I realized that we live in a chauvinist culture in our country. Hadn't realized that. Didn't realize that some of my songs catered to that. So that blew my mind."

I guess that's why nowadays they have intimacy coaches to really make sure everyone knows the rules. She is a top model...I think it was presented to her like a fashion shoot where everyone will be treated like models and not video heauxs.
the entire atmosphere of that video was drenched in misogyny

robin fully dressed in a suit while naked girls paraded around him in a "ditzy model" manner

but omg! he touched one of the models :-o no one saw that coming
this aint that type ah shoot!

im sorry but :disgusted:
She didn't want to be touched  :plea:

Gilgamesh.

I mean, speak your truth but if wasn't important to talk about it then or in the MANY years since he was relevant, I don't know why she's telling us now...

The song is not saying "no means yes"
it's more like liberating the prudish "good girls" to be sexual if they want to

Well that's definitely a way to interpret it

But a lot of discourse back in the day was about it really leaning into the no means yes rape culturey thing

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/robin-thicke-criticized-rapey-blurred-570718/

Very problematic nonetheless
Yea I remember all that. I'm just saying if you really listen to the lyrics. It's mentioning the woman grabbing him and stuff, like what else would a man think when a woman does that? The only thing in it that ppl focused on is "you know you want it" but they were ignoring the context

CHOKE

so she stepped on the set butt naked to be one of the video hoes and was surprised when he touched her

is what im getting from this
so any celebrity who has ever done a nude shoot or anyone who has ever been nude at the beach, in the gym changing room etc deserves to be touched by anyone?
Must be a purple moon, feel like one of those nights...

And I was just thinking about how in retrospect, this song is WORSE than I thought it was

Literally the musical version of no means yes and rape culture

So its not surprising he pulled this

Done self

Yes, the whole song is about rape.
Must be a purple moon, feel like one of those nights...

no

but if someone strips down naked and parades themselves in front of a drunken artist on a video set for a concept that is clearly drenched in misogyny....
i dont understand how she was shocked that he misbehaved . she knew the video set she was on, she saw that he was drunk, and she still shimmy-ed her boobs in front of him for the camera. not to say she deserved it but im just not surprised that happened. it doesn't...shock me considering all the factors.

is anyone else shocked by this?  :uhh:

and im not surprised that the gorls are discovering the song is about rape
look at the video set :disgusted:

but, "fashion shoot! high class event!"

i see the article states she originally didnt wanna do the video but was convinced by the director (Martel) to get onboard with it

she should have trusted her gut. and that Martel person should have cut the mess when she saw Robin stumbling onto the video set clearly intoxicated.

clearly Martel was more concerned with getting the shot than making sure the work environment wasn't full of red flags.
u dont put a drunken man , or woman for that matter...directly behind a completely naked model. some things are just obvious recipes for disaster. this would be one of them.

i wouldn't be so quick to give Martel flowers for finally doing what was right.
common sense clearly escaped her that day
or perhaps it didn't and she chose to ignore it hoping things would all work out for her video.

This girl is so full of shit  :dead: not mentioning the mess a DECADE later because she has a book that's about to be released.

She's always on Instagram posing naked. Hun, if you want niggas to respect you then perhaps you should start respecting yourself first by being modest and covering up with clothes. Dutty gyal.

well to be completely fair to her...it's not uncommon for those who feel victimized to reveal their stories later on in life.

she may have indeed felt victimized. i just wanna know why she or Martel didn't see the red flags and continued shooting

drunk man + your naked ass against his crotch usually will = mess.

Quote"I screamed in my very aggressive Brooklyn voice, 'What the f*** are you doing, that's it!! The shoot is over!!'" she told the U.K. newspaper, adding that she had taken measures to make women feel comfortable on the set.

"Robin sheepishly apologized," Martel says. "As if he knew it was wrong without understanding how it might have felt for Emily."According to Martel, Thicke's record company was told the shoot would be halted, though a "very professional" Ratajkowski assured her that "we could go on.""We kept on and Emily was phenomenal," Martel told the Times. "She's really the star of the video. She's fully mocking him and the male gaze with her beautiful shape and ferocious energy. She's playful, not seductive. And quite hilarious."

In her book Ratajkowski says she didn't dwell on the alleged incident until she realized that Thicke, now a judge on The Masked Singer, had blocked her on Instagram."With that one gesture, Robin Thicke had reminded everyone on set that we women weren't actually in charge," she says of her experience. "I didn't have any real power as the naked girl dancing around in his music video. I was nothing more than the hired mannequin."

there you have it.

there's no "power" in dancing around naked for a fully clothed drunk man in his music video

i understand martel did a great job of selling that idea to her but it's BS. the video was misogynist af, the song has been revealed to be supporting rape ....

shes basically saying what i said. she was a video hoe. it was a video hoe environment.
that's the reality of the situation. there was just a delay in that reality hitting her.
