Whoopi Goldberg sparks outrage after saying on 'The View' that 'the Holocaust isn't about race'

During the roundtable discussion, Goldberg said she was surprised that the nudity in "Maus" -- and not the Holocaust itself -- is what appeared to concern the school board, while co-host Joy Behar replied that the nudity concerns were likely "a canard to throw you off from the fact that they don't like history that makes White people look bad."

"Well, this is White people doing it to White people, so y'all gonna fight amongst yourselves," Goldberg said, referring to the Holocaust.

While none of the co-hosts pushed back after that statement, the conversation then turned to how some are attempting to ban problematic parts of the nation's history, particularly history dealing with race and racism, from being taught in schools.

Goldberg responded: "If you're going to do this, then let's be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn't about race." She added that the Holocaust, which saw an estimated 6 million Jews and 5 million others killed as a result of the Nazis' racist ideology, was about "man's inhumanity to man" and said it involved "two White groups of people."

While many Jewish people today are seen as White because of their skin tone, whether they should be characterized this way remains a subject of debate given that Jews across the world continue to face blatant anti-Semitism. In Nazi Germany, Jewish people were considered a "race" -- the Nazis attributed many negative stereotypes about Jews to "an unchanging biologically determined heritage," according to the US Holocaust Museum.
When Goldberg again insisted that the Holocaust wasn't about race, some of her co-hosts began challenging her statements.

Behar responded that the Nazis considered Jews to be a different race, while Ana Navarro noted that the Holocaust was "about White supremacy" with the Nazis killing both Jewish and Roma people. Sara Haines added that the Nazis did not view Jews as White.

Still, Goldberg continued to insist that the underlying issue was one of "how people treat each other" and the segment concluded shortly after.
The segment captured the attention of the internet, with many Jewish leaders and institutions refuting Goldberg's statements.

"Racism was central to Nazi ideology," the US Holocaust Museum wrote in a tweet shortly after Goldberg's comments began circulating. "Jews were not defined by religion, but by race. Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder."

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, also condemned Goldberg's comments.

"No @WhoopiGoldberg, the #Holocaust was about the Nazi's systematic annihilation of the Jewish people -- who they deemed to be an inferior race," he said. "They dehumanized them and used this racist propaganda to justify slaughtering 6 million Jews. Holocaust distortion is dangerous."

Jewish people (those who are genetically Jewish and not just religiously) are not "White".

they are of Middle Eastern descent with some Eastern European genetics (Russia/Lithuania, etc. which are "White" but that's only PART of their genetic makeup).

which gives them their distinctive features (mainly their noses).

their appearance and non-"White"ness is what made them a target when it came to establishing "racial purity".

love Whoopi but this "White on White crime" mess isn't exactly accurate
you're discussing an event in history where millions of people were systematically killed. it's probably a good idea to know what ur talking about before u know...diving in

Exactly.

This was definitely about race. All white, blonde, blue eyes, athletic build looking people were referred to as Aryan race and they were Master race/Übermensch (better than all races).

The Nazis also killed a lot of Roma & Sinti (200.000-500.000 people).

I also found an article about how much Hitler hated black people and how much Afro-Germans had to suffer. We don't often hear these stories but it's good to remember it was not just about Nazis vs Jews. (There's a story of a man who lived in a Human Zoo during the Nazi regime.)

QuoteAdopting U.S. idealisms of eugenics and scientific experimentation on marginalized communities, the Nazis would also enforce forced sterilization, abortions, and other racial policies against Afro-Germans, persons of African descent, and occupation children under the Nürnberg Laws. While the original 1933 Nürnberg Laws did not include persons of African descent in their clauses, the laws would later evolve to be inclusive of them, as "the Afro-German community was 'a thorn in the Nazi's eye, and bizarrely linked in Hitler's mind to the Jews.'" Countless Afro-Germans, persons of African descent, and even African-Americans were persecuted during the Nazi era, including Hilarius Gilges, Valaida Snow, Jean Marcel Nicolas, Lieutenant Darwin Nichols, Gert Schramm, and Mahjub bin Adam Mohamed, "who made history in Germany when he became the first black person to be given a memorial in his adopted country as an individual victim of the genocide of the Third Reich."

Hitler was part Jewish himself right? and he was mad that a Jewish doctor couldn't save one of his dying parents? I guess it was about "ethnicity" instead of race but tomayto- tomahto

i dont think whoopi is aware that "sub-races" were established within the overall White race

she made a huge mistake saying "it wasn't about race"

i mean yeah to us it's pretty much "ya all look white to me! lmao!!! "
a lot of black people aren't gonna sit down and try to notice the subtle differences between groups of people who they consider to be White.

so i can see that. but if you're talking about the Holocaust SPECIFICALLY you have to realize race and the intricacies of race played a huge part in that

there was some study where they kinda STRETCHED it a bit

they discovered some form of a chromosone which is found among multiple genetic groups - not just Jews

but there was no smoking gun tea to prove it was specifically Jewish ancestry.
just made more of an interesting story to really stretch the possibility a bit.

and they also purposely mentioned/pushed in headlines that he had "African ancestors" knowing damn well most people will assume that means "Black" as in West/Sub-Saharan African. lolllll when it was really possible NORTH African relatives.

Quote"It is most commonly found in the Berbers of Morocco, in Algeria, Libya and Tunisia, as well as among Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews. One can from this postulate that Hitler was related to people whom he despised," the Belgian journalist was quoted as saying.

other groups who were killed were gay people and people with mental and/ or physical disabilities.

Hitler wasn't here for anyone he didnt see as pure White. or those he felt couldnt contribute to society in some way or were disposable.

hopefully they go easy on Whoopi cuz I feel she was tryna make a harmless point ...and maybe trying to push an idea of unity and humans coming together?
but she just clearly doesn't know much about the Holocaust

honest mistake but gor. ....

just stick to the rivers and lakes. i dont wanna see kwee "cancelled" just cuz she was tryna have a kumbaya moment.

i think most reasonable people will see this is just a learning moment/opportunity for Whoopi and not a Nick Cannon tea at all.

kwee apologized.

honest mistake, clearly just a little lack of education and she's not wrongfully standing in her mess.
and has shared that she had that learning moment i predicted this would become.

anyone who continues huffin and puffin just wants to be upset and outraged about something
shes a celebrity. not a history scholar. this stuff will happen

The Holocaust and World War II are so unfortunate to me because it's the reason Jewish people got their own state at the detriment of the Palestinians. You would think after what they experienced during  World War II, they would be more sympathetic, but the Israeli government is still torturing the Palestinians and taking their land. Free Palestine ❤️

ATLien

to paint all Jewish people from that era of World War II with one brush is ....ambitious.

there are many Jews who had nothing to do with whatever mess was/is going on in Israel

who although they were genetically tied to Israel by blood, had not been in that land for generations and generations.
we're talking hundreds of years.

their only home they knew were  parts of Eastern Europe...until many of them fled for their safety.
