So Ryan Coogler went into Bank of America and slipped a note to the teller saying "I'd like to withdraw 12K from my account, but please do it discreetly."

Next thing he knew, cops were behind him and guns were drawn .

There seems to be a debate of whether this was actually race related or if he simply didn't follow proper procedures of just filling out a withdrawal slip instead of writing out a note .

Why even have such a note??
he didn't want ppl to hear him say how much he was taking out, so he wouldn't be a target to get robbed

i think this is an instance of "both things can be true at the same time."

the note was a lot. that branch is in buckhead so im sure they've had lots of clients coming in to withdraw around 10K  - without a "shhhhh keep this on the low low!" note.
it's not as if they have a policy that you have to SHOUT your name , your occupation and the amount you're withdrawing to the entire building.

and the "pass a note to the teller" is actually a very well known robber tactic. i can see someone being a bit taken by surprise with that.

BUT at the same time i do think the way he looks had something to do with it.
if he were a white man dressed up in a suit giving corporate teas would that note have been flagged as quickly?

and i can understand that even if he handed a withdrawal slip to the teller, there's still a risk of the teller repeating what's on the slip to him
a lot of them do that to confirm everything before completing the transaction. if he's truly shook about privacy, i can see why he didn't want to even risk that happening

The fact is though, he wasn't robbing them
he has an account and he gave them identification
A robber wouldn't be asking to withdraw from a specific account, it would just be saying gimme the loot!

right . that's another thing

the note itself didn't say anything really specific about a robbery

or even suggest anything robbery-ish.

i def think his race and appearance that day played a part in that flag.

however if i were him id find another way to handle this in the future.
if you're that concerned about your privacy to the point where you cannot follow normal bank procedure and insist on special  accommodations, get things set up for yourself beforehand.

clearly you know the regular degular "walk in to the teller and withdraw" thing isn't for you.

im actually surprised that someone like him doesn't have a relationship/understanding with "Client Services" at the bank or something. with the money he makes he shouldn't even have to do all this.

cuz clearly this ryan bank thing was just as big of a story, and was previously posted/discussed here!

give it a rest toots.

it happened less than 2 months ago, not in 2019.  and was never discussed here - at least from what i can remember.
