its kinda like women using words like "bitch" to each other.

u can def tell when it's being used for a lil passive fun and when the intent is to demean.

gay men def call each other "fags" for fun, but calling each other "fruits" or "fruity" is not common at all
it's almost exclusively used by hetero men looking to bash gays. we never really picked up or "reclaimed" that for inclusion in gay lingo . sffssfsf
