my problem is the fact that they picked a Black woman to be the wicked witch amongst a bunch of non-Black actors

I mean she auditioned for the role
and she's not some struggling actress who needed it.

im not her banker so i cant speak to what she needs and doesn't need

but the casting is horrible. that i can speak to

Im not talking about the money either. She's a seasoned enough actress not to mention Oscar and other award winning that she can choose which roles she takes.
This casting probably was going to a white woman like in the original movie until she decided she wanted it

if u really wanna go that route, having an oscar doesnt mean u can be extra picky cuz there's so many people banging down ur door

that's been proven several times over - especially for black actors

if anything, the "oscar curse" becomes a real concern. where the OPPOSITE of what you'd expect to happen after winning happens

so i cant even speak to how selective she is able to be. and even if she can be super picky the casting director still isn't off the hook

sometimes looking from the outside in is the best view of how things are being set up.

just as someone whos in a bad relationship may need a friend to say "gorl, he doin u dirty." doesn't mean the person loves being done dirty, or asked for it. just means they're looking at things through a different lens.

that's why I said a seasoned actress AND Oscar winning. Meaning outside of the award she has a long resume with hit movies to her name. It's not like she just won an Oscar and disappeared

and you may want to look up Cynthia's comments about American Black ppl being that she's from the UK. She's gotten quite some backlash for comments she's made. So even if someone told her it doesn't look good for a Black woman im not sure she would listen or agree

which is actually why i'm lashing the casting directors

because they were supposed to tell an award winning actress NO to this role. Because shes Black
 

because i find it odd that the only main Black actress in the cast happens to be the wicked witch.

well it is called WICKED sir. She's the title character. They could have casted more black characters but if there had to be just one, definitely give them the top billing

so if someone writes up a movie called EVIL and casts a Black person to play the evil aggressor

and everyone else to be White Asian or Hispanic

it's OK because the evil aggressor is a focal point of the movie!

so the concept of or potential instances of colorism clearly doesn't go over ur head

(which can be argued considering Tyler has plenty of roles where the dark skinned men were the good guys or "saved" women from bad situations. i'll let u have it though.)

but somehow the concern i brought into this thread about a dark skinned , unambiguous Black woman drowning in a sea of Whites Chinks and Spics in a cast as the EVIL character (as in, the combination of racism and colorism) is completely lost on you.

u clearly knew who to point the finger at in Tyler's case.

didn't see u blaming the darker skinned characters for accepting the roles.

if this story line is much different than the "wicked witch of the west" in Oz

then that's somewhat different for sure.

thanks for pointing that out . im not super familiar with the play - i obviously assumed the play would be similar to the movie "Oz" in story line.

i'm reading more about it now and it seems that she is indeed  portrayed as misunderstood and I'm now reading more commentary/input from Black women who say they can actually relate to the character and are proud to see someone like Cynthia playing the role.

but this actually speaks to why Cynthia may be upset about her face being covered on that poster in the OP.

based on what im reading now, it looks like there have been Black women who've actually fought to play this role for years (as in, the play, etc) .

now that it's here for Cynthia, she may be understandably super sensitive to people erasing her image from it - whether it be intentional or not.

and nah, none of this speaks to why shes upset. they literally made an edit to match the original poster, thats it. it almost reads as she didnt even realize what the intent was because shes ignorant to the source material. either that or shes just insufferably egotistical, yet fragile enough to percieve this as some personal attack on HER.

and to be clear, she was never erased. they brought the brim of the hat down to cover her eyes-- just like the originsl poster-- and they also photoshopped ariana's hand to cover a bit more of her face TOO-- just like the original poster. you can still tell exactly who tf they are, in addition to the fact that shes LITERALLY top billed casting and the main character of the damn movie ccccvvvvvv. erased where???
