just to add on to this (cuz this actually made me curious to see which species is more popular in households.  and i started researching. )

Dogs are actually more popular statistically. i was kinda surprised to learn 74% of pet owners in America are dog owners.  i knew it COULD be higher than cats but not by that much. but it makes sense. the whole "man's best friend" thing.

preference due to species in itself is a obviously a strong driver behind this.

Now a more interesting comparison would be which breeds of dogs are "the best".

A dog is completely out of the question for me, no matter how cute and loyal it is. No.
