when i first started reading it i thought it was a note to his wife...like a divorce tea

and now that i re-read it, im thinking that's what it is...but intentionally worded in a way where it can be taken as a suicide note as well
without actually mentioning plans to end his life. so no one can accuse him of explicitly saying that or lying.
