A San Antonio school police officer is under investigation after video shows him slamming a 12-year-old girl on her face.

The 33-second clip uploaded on Tuesday shows a San Antonio Independent School district police officer struggling with Janissa Valdez, a sixth grade student at Rhodes Middle School.

Students watching were laughing, but not for long after the officer, identified as Joshua Kehm, lifts her up with ease and slams her down in a violent swoop, smacking her face on the floor.

She was hit so hard, she didn?t even remember the slam at first.


She suffered a swollen bruise near her right eye after her face hit the brick floor, KSAT12 reported.

?You could actually hear her head hit the concrete. That?s what hurt me the most,? Gloria Valdez, Janissa?s mother, told the local outlet. ?And he didn?t even seem like it bothered him. And he still handcuffed her after she was unconscious.?

The officer told the concerned mother he ?did what he had to do at the moment,? Valdez said.

Several worried students were heard asking the pre-teen if she was OK while she lay motionless and was pinned by the officer.

Officer Kehm has been placed on paid administrative leave while the school administration and the district police investigate the video.

Kehm had been a police officer with the SAISD for a little more than a year, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before that, he was a non-lethal weapons instructor for the U.S. Air Force, his now-deleted profile listed.

?It?s very concerning. It?s alarming to see this,? district spokesperson Leslie Price told reporters. ?And while we want to get all the details, I want people to know that excessive force will not be tolerated in this district.?

Kehm was called to the hallway at the middle school?s West Side campus in response to a fight, but Janissa said she never lifted a finger.

Other students had been anticipating a fight on March 29, but she approached the other girl to see if the two could talk it out, Janissa explained.

The officer misinterpreted it as the start of a big brawl and jumped in to slam her, the 12-year-old said.

Even after suffering a bruised face, the sixth grader was suspended for two days, and has yet to return to school more than a week after the incident, in fear of what her classmates would say.

School administration learned about the clip on Tuesday.

Kehm declined to comment to reporters in San Antonio.

I'm sure as an officer he's handled dudes twice her size.
