Mariah doesn't give me such a legendary vibe... She neither has hood/r&b classics like Bert & Mary, nor the truly universal Aerosmith type anthem... Iono when I saw her live she gave me very little. She's just in a category of her own. She's just Mariah...

Gotta agree. I always felt that way even before I got into her music.

I mean looking at the stats, you would think it is a no brainer, but I just can't see a community of people bopping downe to a Best of Mariah mess. Bert, MJ, Mary, people like that give the soundtrack to your life. Prince is revered for his high level of musicality... Whitney has about 5 or 6 massive global anthems.

And Mimi's hits aren't really timeless or universal... iono she just has many.

Mariah was/is regarded as one of the best female vocalists of all time. And has the time, accolades and performances to show for it. How is she not legend?

The only way I could see it is if you argue that all the new girls mold themselves after Mariah when they audition for a vocal mess, but really Whitney did that before her. I guess she had more of an R&B/sexy edge.

Britney is already considered a living legend gorls.

Like why is it even up for discussion?  :uhh:
but Janet isn't?

Just based on hype and sales like no, the general public doesn't seem to use THAT much anymore.

Tranet is kinda synonymous with excellence in female dancing, and doing upbeat edgy dance pop music.

Look I love Feedback, Rhythm Nation but sis kinda tarnished her legacy.

GYNandTONIC

Being an icon is about style, aesthetic, and state of being.  A legend speaks more to your talent, contribution to your genre, and respect amognst peers and fans.

They're few artist who are blessed to be both (MJ, Prince, Janet, Madonna). Some are only icons (Britney, Cher, Diana Ross), and others are only legends (Whitney, Mariah, Celine).

Beyonce will be both, Rhianna will be iconic, and Adele will be a legend.
