Buckle up on your drive to Thanksgiving dinner ? especially if you?re traveling through Texas or Louisiana.

The neighboring southern states are home to the worst driver in the country, according to a study by car insurance comparison website CarInsuranceComparison.com.

The study used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analyzed statistics about fatal crashes in several categories, including those that involve drunk driving, careless driving, speeding, and failure to obey basic traffic laws. The composite scores yielded the definitive list of bad-driver states.

Louisiana and Texas tied for first place, while South Carolina came in third, North Dakota took fourth and Delaware placed fifth.

Rounding out the top ten states for bad drivers were New Mexico, Nevada, Alabama, Arizona and Montana.

Minnesota ranked the lowest on the dangerous list, meaning its home to the best drivers. Vermont, Virginia, Iowa and Rhode Island capped off the list of safest driving states.

Massachusetts ? long the butt of bad driving jokes ? came in low on the list of terrible motorists, ranking as the No. 6 best driving state. New Jersey is also a relatively safe state for highway travelers, coming in as the No. 9 best.

And New York is somewhere in the middle. It ranks as the No. 30 worst driving state ? a spot it shares with the District of Columbia.

More than 43 million Americans are expected to hit the road over Thanksgiving weekend, according to AAA. Another 5 million will take planes, trains, buses and boast to get home for the holiday.
