From the 90's, the only other person I could see singing this song is Ginuwine, with the belting range it requires

L.A. Reid talked about this in his book. Babyface never intended "Can We Talk" to be for Usher, as he didn't find Usher to be a great singer. In the book, L.A says he kept bringing Usher to the studio while Babyface was working, telling Usher the songs were for him. Face wasn't interested in working with Usher. When it was time to cut "Can We Talk", LA brought Usher to the studio only to find Tevin recording the song. LA said Usher stayed to watch the session, but that his feelings were hurt.

Tevin Campbell and Quindon Tarver were like the most gifted boy singers since young Michael.
