Saying non-whites are ethnic marks them as being someone different, altering from "regular" people who do not have a label. A Chinese woman is not anymore "ethnic" than a Swedish woman. Using the term ethnic as synonym for non-whites perpetuates this binary between whites who are the default and all other people who are ethnically marked.

Saying non-whites are ethnic is an appropriate term because its generally believed that White's don't really have a culture(any that they didn't borrow from other groups) or the "standard" way of referring to people of color is using the term "ethnic". Ethnic means what? Different social race? Culture?


So if you believe the 1st premise whites shouldn't ever be referred to as ethnic. A white person is reputed to be white regardless of where they're from.
You're talking about others perpetuating whites as the "standard" when your statement is actually the culprit.

You asked what ethnic means? It simply means pertaining to a certain ethnicity. That is what it means. White American is - guess what? - also an ethnic group.
