Not deserved at all. It's unfair to artists that were successful prior to the digital era, to be overshadowed by all these new "record breaking" songs. You can't tell me that artist like MJ, Mariah, Whitney, etc wouldn't have more than 3 diamond singles if digital music was available during their peaks. I'm sure  songs like The Boy Is Mine, I Believe I Can Fly, I'll Be Missing You also would've reached higher milestones.

Brandy, MJ, Mariah, R. Kelly & Biggie all sold several million albums on the flipside so... I don't see how it's unfair

Times have changed. Don't you see mega stars like Mariah and Alicia opening with 30-50k? The new system is needed.

the artists you mentioned have diamond albums though. far greater than some random single. it is what it is
