My life and 411 sounds completely different ..
The difference was faith

I agree with this but I think Mary was deep fried out the gate. Faith influenced her sound but not her persona, look, etc.

she definitely gave soul here:

Soul is basically Gospel influenced, and Whit was as church as it gets. She just didn't have the gritty delivery. But everything from the vibrato, to the power and conviction, that's Soul all day.
and thank God she didn't have that delivery
She would've been stuck there and not had been able to translate those angelic vocals and pop finishes to the record

Get into pics of Mary and faith chilling before 411!
Once Mary got word that faith got signed
Sis went completely blond and stopped using ..
Rushed her Alber out and haulted the release of Faiths Alber
That's why the "faith" album was printed with "love don't live" feat Mary but it doesn't have Mary vocals on oh
Sis was Fuming

I don't think he was driving a rivalry. I think he felt like he did amazing things for Mary's career but she wasn't HIS artist so when he found what he thought was the better version, that's where the focus went. And Mary couldn't quite take.
