I always assumed they were. I thought it was because people smoked or it was a reflection of how healthy your mouth is. Ive seen people with really great teeth and dark gums tho, so I guess it could just be sumn people have

I see the melanin part tho so thats good to know. I havent really thought about it since I was younger. I figured it wasnt a bad thing anymore once I saw people with beautiful mouths and darker gums but I didnt care enough to read up on it
