I honestly think this guy was just being the typical guy.
Really don't think it's as deep as insecurity or anything.

A lot of straight men are like that. They'll make silly comments like this - generally they aren't very sensitive people and they don't expect other guys to be.

Exactly, filled with insecurities and intimidation: he's standing next to a beautiful Nick Jonas so he had to point out his "flaws" in one way or another. I don't think it goes too deep but "sizing up" is definitely a level of insecurity and straight men are the lead example..

I do agree that straight men do a lot of "sizing up", but I'd say its more competitiveness than insecurity or projection of some sort.

It's really instinctive for them.

I used to hang around a lot of straight guys back in the hood and they play rough.
Their mouths are reckless, they crack jokes on each other for sport....it's like - they literally take none of that stuff seriously.

Throw the same elements into a group of women and you'll have people catching feelings and not speaking to each other for months.

It could be, I honestly think men don't care about stuff like that.
With them a physically appealing thing would be a women, not how his friend looks with a new haircut.
Men do compliment each other, just not how females would compliment each other with their new shoes, bags, purses, hairdo ect
Appearance and fashion are literally 80% of a females world,  they take that shit seriously
