QuoteOne of the most prolific directors to emerge in hip-hop in the 90s was Harold "Hype" Williams, the revered director whose unconventional and innovative vision set the bar high for music videos and created some of the most iconic visuals for the genre's biggest acts including Busta Rhymes, TLC, The Notorious B.I.G and Kanye West. On Monday (Sept. 18), VH1 will honor Williams at the 2017 Hip-Hop Honors ceremony for his artistic contributions to hip-hop and lasting influence on the culture.

Williams is widely recognized for his signature video aesthetics, which ranged from low and high-angle camera shots, elaborate visual effects and affinity for fish-eye lens. His groundbreaking visual style has gifted the hip-hop culture with timeless visuals like Busta Rhymes' futuristic "What's It Gonna Be" and Missy Elliott's seminal visual "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," where she dons the iconic inflated garbage bag and a variety of stylish sunglasses. The celebrated director is also responsible for writing the script for Kanye West's "Runaway" short film and directed West's "Can't Tell Me Nothing," "Stronger," "Heartless" and plenty more.

In addition to Williams, Martin Lawrence and Mariah Carey will also be honored at the ceremony, which will be hosted by Regina Hall. Missy Elliott, a 90s "game-changer" herself, will also hit the stage for the 90s block-party.

The star-studded event will be held at Paramount Studios on Sept. 17 and will air on Monday (Sept. 18) at 9 pm EST on VH1.

Hype Williams shoulda been honored like 10 years ago.

And he's kinda fallen off. The videos for Kesha's We R Who We R, JLOs Booty and PID of course we're terrible. He only slays with a huge budget it seems.

Beyonc?'s "BLOW" was his last great video.

But at least MTV gave him the Vanguard in 2006.
