My only problem with preference is when people start broadcasting it to everyone. 

Because then it can come off offensive and rude.  Otherwise, I've always felt preference is personal and is honestly between that person and who they are attracted to.  There is always mob mentality when people find out they're not included in someone's attraction palette, and the shade is, half the time they're not attracted to the person, anyway.
