It happens all the time that they take away elements or photoshop the background to reduce noise. It is not all about race (it can be really simple that someone just wants space for text) but I get her point. They should have asked permission first

Fashion/entertainment photos get heavily altered all the time. And sometimes we don't even notice. For example they reduced the length of JLOs legs on the back cover of 'Love?' so that it fits into the frame. Also, the colors of the clothes on the 'PCD' album cover were completely altered to grey-ish tones, just so that they don't look too bright.

However, black hair is a sensitive topic, so they should have known better.
