I think she basically did for him what he was afraid to do for himself.

It's not like she happened to catch him tonguing down a man and he adamantly denied being homosexual, etc.

He was comfortable enough to share his truth with people.

And Patti loves the gays. She tore that American Idol gor into bits for coming for us.  So I think she knows that in her heart of hearts she was doing a favor for her friend by speaking up. She seems really genuine. I see why he used.
