You didn't have that at your high school? Mines did, and that was way back in 2008.     

We had home economics, woodshop, stuff like that that was held in classrooms. But this was basically a  Meineke shop on the back of the school

Its actually pretty common. Kids already spend 8 hours in school, come home, and have about 5 hours of homework to do. Thats just illogical. More homework doesn?t prove more intelligence either. And dont even get me started on the CURRICULUM of that said homework.
