There's different forms of depression. But generally it's caused by a low level of hormones like serotonin and/or dopamine in your brain. So in a way it actually is a physical disease. It can be genetical or grow from traumatic experiences, lasting for a long time, and becoming dangerous if untreated.
Baph, when someone surgically removes a good amount of those hormones from your brain (which is not possible, but I'm just giving an example) you will probably start to feel mentally exhausted and eventually kill yourself because you can't take the pressure.
It's really not a thing of pulling yourself together.
You can also create real and fake physical symptoms due to depression.

I've had psychosomatic pain before. It started some time before my final exams. I was SO sure I had physical issues. The doctors couldn't find anything. The pain suddenly stopped right after the exams.
