It only sounds that way to people who want it to sound that way.  Usually people don't use the term friend zone to mean smashing.

I think that's what he means.  And that he started talking to her when Jay Z was trying to holla at the same time.  But she just liked Dame for whatever reason.  At least that's what I got from it.
