?Don?t Make This About Mo?Nique? Iyanla Weighs In On Comedienne?s Call For Netflix Boycott

As someone who?s had a falling out with an individual (Oprah) and company (Harpo) over feeling as though she wasn?t getting her just due (her own show), we asked Iyanla Vanzant to weigh in on the controversy and the mixed reactions to Mo?Nique?s fight for equality and, in her opinion, this situation is much bigger than the comedienne.

?Why are we surprised that she?s asking people to acknowledge that they diminish and demean us?? Iyanla asked when we requested she speak on the situation. ?They do it every day. The president of the country relegated us to the sh-thole, so why are we surprised at this? The question becomes what are we going to do about it??

The life coach?s point is valid since, although some feel Mo?Nique wasn?t necessarily deserving of more pay, we know equal pay for Black women is still very much an issue in Hollywood and beyond.

?Mo?Nique can?t fight that battle by herself and people will not stand up for the battle or not stand up for the cause because it?s Mo?Nique, well, it didn?t start with Mo?Nique. So either we?re going to do it or we?re not, but don?t make this about Mo?Nique. It?s not about Mo?Nique. Mo?Nique is just saying what other people have refused to say,? Iyanla added.

Speaking to pay disparities across the diaspora, Iyanla continued to point out reasons why Monique deserves our support.

?Number one, we keep acting like we?re shocked and surprised that we still living in a racist country when the president can talk about bad hombres and sh-thole countries, what is that? Why aren?t we doing something about that right there? The mere fact that brown people in this country, that we have relegated to Mexicans and we forget about Dominicans and Salvadoreans and Panamanians and all the cocoa brown people that he called bad hombres, we know that they get paid less than everybody else. So if we let them pay the brown people less, why do we think they won?t pay the Black people less? I don?t understand.?

As valid a point as that is, what continues to be called into question is whether Mo?Nique was offered less money by Netflix because she?s Black and a woman or if $500,000 was fair given her relevance and resume. What do you think?

Do you think Iyanla is right when she says this battle isn?t really about Mo?Nique?

ya rock muh world.

So basically Mo'nique is not the woman to be spearheading this mess.

And I agree because the comparisons she made between herself and Dave Chapelle/Chris Rock put a load of cum on her campaign's mug.

Annie

They should boycott iyanla until she finishes her psychology bachelor

When white people when an Oscar, they immediately make $20 million per movie. When blacks win, they don?t see half of that.

MoNiques resume warrants more than $500,000 especially considering she couldn?t do another comedy special of use the footage for at least 2 years and Netflix got the first opportunity at her next comedy special and could lowball her even if another company offered her more.

We rush to stand behind the white girls, but say a woman who has been doing comedy for almost 30 years and who has an Oscar isn?t with a few million?

Her mistake was asking black peope to boycott and not having a white manager. Black people always believe a white manager legitimizes shit.

Genesis

Exactly. People are  so conditioned to protest and beg for acceptance instead of taking matters in their own hands

Monique aint backing down to the white devil and doesnt care if it costs her career (which it will)

That?s admirable.

This alone, is the reason why black people get on my fucking nerves.

I respect your perspective, but I hope YOU don't think like this.

I respect your perspective... but man. Do you really think like this?

There are honestly black people alive who think white people legitimize a cause.
The problem is so many based themselves off of white culture or white mainstream America.

Why is it that black people have to use a ?Becky? voice in order to consider themselves ?professional?

Anytime these famous women make their husband/spouse their manager, everybody immediately looks to him to be a vulture or opportunist, especially in the black culture.

If Monique had not called for a boycott, had a white manager and lawyer...like the chick Black Chyna and them have been hiring, people would be taking her more seriously. Instead, people want to point fingers at her husband, their open relationship, her being loud and aggressive; instead of just acknowledging that what she?s fighting for is what a lot of people have been fighting for. You don?t have to like the messenger in order to acknowledge that the message is valid.

I edited my post.
I don't want you to think I don't like you.

What I'm saying is, the message being valid (as in, its whats been going on in our communities for decades) does not mean the message is RIGHT for us to follow.
And until black people (whomever has that perspective) change the way they view the world, we'll always be in this mess.  I was not raised to think that way, thankfully.  So I approach issues like these in a different way, in my life.  Regardless of what the MAJORITY rule is saying.

This is my pass to say WHATEVER tf I wanna say about the mess she releases so I don't wanna hear SHIT! Baby mama is a mess of a song btw

It's part of the reason why I cant even bring myself to attack Mo'nique.
Because my mindset says, "forget that bitch"... "this is actually an issue, and I don't want to get LOST in dragging her, forgetting that a real issue exists... let me focus on Viola..."

I'm not saying people can't lash Mo'Nique for her bad behavior.  But at some point, let's refocus.
People (black included) would spend more time making memes about her... rather than focusing on a critical issue that she should not be at the helm of.

You know what I mean?

I think we actually agree we just have different ways of wording it.

I hate that people reduced what she said to a meme. It?s self-hate to a certain degree.

Same way I see people making jokes about Kobe winning the Oscar instead of just congratulating his accomplishment.

Everybody was voicing their opinion bout equal pay when it came to the white lady and E! Someone has to speak up. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer win awards anc aren?t getting 25% of what their white female counterparts are getting.
