It's def a NYC thing (less so, mainly for Staten Island).
People have cars in all boroughs, yes... but it could be more inconvenient than not for most.

My biggest goal this year is to find a happier medium (cheaper rent, still relatively close to work)... I would like to save more to own property.

Renting is not my cup of tea.
