Within hours of the piece going live, my social media suddenly went into meltdown. Nicki Minaj?s notoriously zealous fanbase, who call themselves ?The Barbz?, were furious that I had compared Minaj to Cardi B. They said I needed to be fired, delete the piece and publicly apologise. It started on Twitter, with almost every tweet making the point that I was white and therefore wasn?t entitled to comment about black music; that I was racist for pitting two black musicians against each other (which was not my agenda in the slightest). ?Keep your white ass opinions out of the female rap discussion, becky. your article is beyond shitty and you're extremely ugly?; ?she?s white, I should have known.? They called me anti-feminist for insulting women, evidently oblivious to the fact this is exactly what they were doing to me. But then they found me on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Within a single minute, I had 172 violent comments on my Instagram photos, hundreds of people had followed me and sent me direct messages.?I?m going to slit your throat, bitch!!!?; ?I will kill you bitch!?; ?You better to delete that before we get your address and start hunting you and your family down!!?; ?you stupid racist bitch?; ?I swear to God I will find you and cut your dirty white ass up?. My friends started to WhatsApp me to say they were receiving abuse about me on their own photos too ? the Barbz were going through my tagged photos. I was frantically blocking users while trying to make my account private. My meal went cold as my boyfriend sat helplessly across the table, and did the only thing he could do: pour more wine.
