I can understand her not wanting to be boxed into just seeing herself as "just black".
Clearly, Raven may have some ethnic background that is a little varied. My only problem is that she clearly didn't do her research on her ethnic makeup. Instead of her rhetoric coming off as a need to belong and associate herself with her true ethnic identity, it came off as her simply wanting to disassociate herself from being African American.
There's no problem with someone calling a black person "black" or "African American". That is our identity in the states (and around the world as well) whether you like it or not. And that identity has such a beautiful and strong history behind it; why wouldn't you want to be a part of that?
Otherwise, I see what she means. Her family is from Louisiana, which is known for springing off strong mixed Creole heritage (French, Native blood, etc.). Looking at Raven I can tell she got a lot of it. So there is definitely a varied history there for her to explore.
I just think her rhetoric would be so much stronger if she just took the time to educate herself on well....herself. LOL And other things she chooses to speak about....before opening her mouth. She says a lot of controversial things without the appropriate supporting evidence to back it up.
