I used to envy people who had names like Daquan, etc. growing up in Southside.

I always thought they were cool and my name was kinda nerdy.

Growing up in the hood with my first name wasn't exactly the most fun thing. You don't wanna be different when you're younger.

It was so bad that I'd go to the teacher's desk BEFORE class began so she could mark me "present". Don't call my name out lol. I'm here. Thanks.

!!!!!! I share a similar story with my name being Arabic. I didn?t embrace that side of my life at ALL. My dad would roll up to the school with his strong ass accent and no one would ever say my name correctly

And I wasn't throwing shots at anyone.

Personally I just know my dad's lineage/surname has slavery baked into it. So I'm very meh when it comes to my last name. Proud because it's part of who I am and my history as a person. That is my father's history so it's mine as well. But the name itself - I know is not inherently "mine".

I do wonder where last names like "Jenkins" came from though. Ain't no way a European was behinda tea like that.
