If you?ve been listening to R&B from new stars Tinashe, FKA twigs, and Jhen? Aiko, you might have heard the echo of a familiar kind of sound: the sultry, futuristic music of that small surge of R&B pop from around the turn of the century?girl groups like Blaque, 3LW, and 702, and the singer M?a. Though they have now mostly faded from the front row of pop culture, these artists are proof of a kind of inevitability of influence, with their sounds now palpable in the music of a whole new generation of musicians who grew up on their hits.

Influenced by the avant-popiness of their predecessors, these women elbowed out the crunchy catchiness of Britney Spears and aggression of Kid Rock with interesting, seductive music. It wasn?t neo-soul so much as neo-R&B?an innovative take on a beloved genre that promised a way forward. They collaged the dominant sounds of R&B production at the time (from innovators like Timb, Missy, Jermaine Dupri, and"Boy is Mine" producers Dallas Austin and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins) and made something peppy and poppy and radio-friendly that kept pace with the Britneys and the N ?Syncs without sacrificing experimentation.

But the DNA of M?a, 3LW, Blaque, and 702 is there in every smoky, steely note. Though the careers of the Y2K girls didn?t last?perhaps Destiny?s Child, who emerged around the same time, mopped up all the glory?it?s clear that their influence has.
