2009: Bonnie Sweeten of Feasterville, PA called 911 and reported that she and her 9-year-old daughter had been carjacked and were being held in the trunk of her car by two black men. A massive man-hunt was immediately ordered. After Sweeten made several more 911 calls, her story began to fall apart. A camera at Philadelphia International Airport caught her buying two one-way tickets to Orlando, Florida to go to Disney World. She is currently in prison.

Charles Stuart was a Boston man who shot his pregnant wife in the head and then shot himself in the abdomen. Stuart told the police that a Black man was responsible for the shootings, sparking a police round-up of hundreds of Black men for questioning. Stuart even picked a man out of a lineup. Stuart?s story unraveled and he committed suicide by jumping off a bridge.

These are the famous cases, but there are thousands of lesser-known cases where black men have been wrongly convicted. We know this due to the excellent work of the Innocence Project, a non-profit legal organization that painstakingly re-examines DNA (and other) evidence from guilty verdicts, bringing vital new information back to the legal system.

With very limited resources, the Innocence Project and other justice advocates have conducted inquiries leading to the exoneration of over 2 000 individuals, all listed in the National Registry of Exonerations. Data from the University of Michigan indicate that black men constitute over 40% of these exonerations, despite making up only 6% of the U.S. Population.

Ashley Todd, a volunteer for the McCain/Palin campaign, told investigators she was getting cash from an ATM when a 6-foot-4 black man approached her from behind, put a knife blade to her throat and demanded money. On a roll, she continued with . . .the man noticed a McCain sticker on her car punched her in the back of the head, knocked her to the ground and scratched a backward letter ?B? into her face with a dull knife and then the man told her she was going to become an Obama supporter. 2003: A pizza deliveryman Brian Wells walked into a bank in Erie, Pa. with a bomb locked around his neck. He told police that a group of Black men had taken him hostage and put the bomb there. After receiving close to $9,000, the pizza man was blown to bits by the bomb. Police would later find out that Wells was in on the plot with a few of his white buddies. (Photo: AP)
