The documentary explained it better, the general consensus was that these boys were guilty because they had admitted to it. But no one knew all the details about them being coerced, held from their parents and there being no physical evidence. That plus the "wilding" mess being pushed by the press branded them a bunch of out of control kids who were were wreaking havoc all over the city.

It's funny to see how much the news cycles shaped public views before social media came along.
