They were all just pop girls who never tried anything urban until after Mary. I'm not hating on any of those ladies because I adore them all, but it's the truth.

Toni was definitely Urban from the beginning. Her only Pop ballad was Unbreak
but Love Shouldve, Sad Love Song, Making Me High, Let It Flow etc are smooth R&B
Whitney was Pop but Im Your Baby was urban/New Jack Swing.
