I have a feeling that she may have been treated differently because of her heritage

As Romero says, she's kinda using the one drop mess. If it's back a couple generations then that's obviously not who you are in your entirety

But I feel other people may have forced that on her - directly or indirectly. And she internalized it. It's a long shot but I think it's a reasonable conclusion.

It's the only explanation I can think of that would make it hard for her to say "I'm White, mixed with Black".

Probably people commented a lot on her African features.
